William Dietrich ("Bill") Stockman, 97, passed away peacefully of natural causes on August 23, 2022 in Georgetown, TX.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm (mt) on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Centennial Chapel (the "Chapel"), 700 2nd Avenue South, Hettinger, North Dakota. Burial will be in the family plot at the Hettinger, ND Cemetery immediately following the service. After the burial a lunch will be served at the Chapel.

Bill was born on October 31, 1924 in Alamo, North Dakota to George and Winnifred Stockman. He was the second of three children. He spent his early years in Alamo with his parents, his two siblings and an extended group of Stockman relatives. He attended grade school in Alamo until the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota. There he continued school and graduated from Fargo Central High. At Fargo Central he was on the hockey team that won the state championship. His dedication and love for skating earned him the nickname "Sailor". He attended North Dakota State University his freshman year and then enlisted in the Army. His unit was scheduled to go overseas when the war ended. When he returned to civilian life, he continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

After graduating from the U of M, he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the "Corp") where he worked for most of his career. During his career with the Corp he worked on improving waterways, designing and constructing dams and the minuteman missile sites along the US-Canadian border. For his first assignment with the Corp, he was first sent to the Bismarck, ND office to work on the design and construction of the Garrison Dam (a large earthen dam on the Missouri River north of Bismarck). He later worked at the Omaha, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and New York offices. While in Washington, DC he received his master's degree in Civil Engineering from Catholic University of America.

While in Bismarck he met Elizabeth (Betty) Thorson. They were married on November 12, 1950. They have three children, Linda Carol Stockman, Mark William Stockman and Jane Lynette Stockman, and three Grandchildren, Lindsey Stockman Wagner, Samantha J Stockman, and Sophie Stockman. Family was a top priority for Bill. He was very proud of his family and loved them very much. Loyalty was also a top priority for Bill and he was always there for his family and friends. This brought Bill great joy and satisfaction.

Bill loved to build things, manage his finances and farm. Bill was a master carpenter and possessed a wide range of mechanical skills (including work on automobiles, HVAC systems, plumbing, wiring etc). Bill was an astute and careful investor. He learned the craft from his father and honed his skills over the years to expand the family's success. Bill owned a farm with his father near Alamo, ND. No matter where the family lived, he would typically use a portion of his vacation time each spring to help his father put in the crop at the farm. After Bill retired, he and Betty moved back to North Dakota and he farmed for many years (several with his father). When not farming, he and Betty enjoyed getting together with family and traveling. After Bill retired from farming, he and Betty moved to Bismarck, ND to be close to their son's

family. Later he and Betty built a home in Sun City, near Georgetown, Texas. This eventually allowed them to spend winters there with their two daughters and granddaughter.

Bill was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His family loved him and will miss him very much.

Bill is survived by: his wife of 72 years – Elizabeth A Stockman; his three children- daughters Linda C Stockman and Jane L Stockman of Georgetown, Texas and son Mark W Stockman of Bismarck, North Dakota: and his three granddaughters- Lindsey Stockman Wagner of Irvine, California, Samantha J Stockman of New York, New York, and Sophie Y Stockman of Georgetown, Texas.
