William Joseph Schmidt, 64, earned his angel wings when the good Lord called him home in Heaven on June 28th, 2026. He was born the 4th child of 8 children on October 13, 1961 in Elgin, ND to Jacob and Marian (Koch) Schmidt of Mott, ND.

He was a very kind man, always ready to reach out to someone in need. He loved fishing and seeing the world, learning and exploring new things.

William (Bill) had a very diverse and interesting life. He went to Mott Lincoln High School but when he made the decision that school wasn't for him, he returned to school to finish his G.E.D. so he could join the Active Army in 1981, to see what the world had to offer. He completed his active duty in 1984 with an honorable discharge. As a result of his duty, he received a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal.

After a while, he missed wearing the uniform, so in 1985, he enlisted in the Mott unit of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion, North Dakota Army National Guard as a weekend soldier, where he stayed until his retirement as an E5 in 2003, with 21 years of service and an honorable discharge.

For his living wage, he was a Machinist (operator) for Steffes, LLC in Dickinson, ND from 1988, until his retirement in 2022, after 34 years.

Bill worked various jobs and the Mott C-store for a bit, but he was missing something, so he ventured out into a new line of work and purchased the local Oasis Bar in Mott in 2023, where he remained until his passing. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. If a person needed a helping hand, Bill was always there to help.

William is survived by 4 sisters and 3 brothers: Beverly Eng and Marilyn (Rod) Rohrer, both of Bismarck, Evelyn (Lee) Fiedler of Vinita, OK, Susan (Scott) Newhall of Barryton, MI, Robert (Bob) Schmidt of Scottsdale, AZ, Frank Schmidt from Mott, James M. Schmidt from Barrigada, Guam. In addition, he is survived by numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
