Wilbert was born in Mott, ND on November 17, 1931 to John Herner Sr. and Marie (Wolf) Herner. He was the youngest of four children and was the last living sibling. Wilbert was raised on a farm and worked closely with his brother John Herner Jr. for many years in a combined farming operation. Even after they split their farms they continued to share many farming duties along with their brother Jerome who farmed close by. Wilbert married Betty Helfrich on November 14, 1951 and from this union they raised four boys on a farm and cattle operation.
Wilbert could fix anything. Whether it was a welding job, or an engine overhaul, or inventing and building a solution to assist on the farm, he was always thinking of a better way to do things. Wilbert and Betty moved into Mott in 1993 but he continued to farm and assist for many years as his son Alan took over the farm operation.
Wilbert was a member of the St Placidus and St Vincent parishes, a life member of the Knights of Columbus and served many years on the Solen Township Board in leadership positions. Wilbert and Betty enjoyed a good game of cards with many neighbors and relatives and also enjoyed watching the local high school sporting events.
Wilbert entered the Western Horizons Care Center In Hettinger in July 2022 and was a resident there until his death.
