Funeral services for Walter M. Gernand, age 82, of New Leipzig, will be 9:00am MT, Monday, December 11, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in New Leipzig with Fr. Charles Zins and Fr Todd Kreitinger, officiating.


Burial will be on Monday at 3:00pm CT at the ND Veterans Cemetery with full military honors afforded by the Baesler-Achtenberg American Legion Post #211 of New Leipzig; and the Mandan VFW 707 of Mandan.


Special music will be provided by Paula Rivinius, Patsy Hertz, and Jackie Stewart. Serving as casketbearers are Grant Galvin, William Tryon, Dakota Hunger, Thomas Belfiore, Aaron Paulson, and Eric Gernand.


WATLER MARION GERNAND was born June 14, 1924 in Needville, TX the son of Fredrick and Agnes (Chaston) Gernand. Walter was inducted into the US Army on March 11, 1943 and served in the European Theater with the 703rd Engineering Company. He earned 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1945.


Walter grew up in Texas and moved to North Dakota and married Eva Berger on July 4, 1950 at Flasher, ND. Walter and Eva made their home in New Leipzig for the past several years. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, playing cards, and doing puzzles.


Walter passed away on Tuesday afternoon, December 5, at the Jacobson Memorial Care Center in Elgin.


Surviving family members include his wife Eva, New Leipzig; 3 sons, Charles Gernand, Beulah, ND; Gerard (Candice) Gernand, Bismarck, ND; Philip (Amanda) Gernand, Federal Way, WA; 7 daughters, Sarah Leingang (Bill Galvin) Pick City, ND; Lucy (Bill) Tryon, Washburn, ND; Agnes (Tom) Belfiore, Blanchard, OK; Michele (Rod) Siefke, Hemingford, NE; Mary (Ralph) Roller, Pick City, ND; Yvonne Gernand, Washburn, ND; Angela (Russ) Paulson, Richardton, ND; 33 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law, Sam Griffith, Rosenburg, TX; 1 sister-in-law, Phyllis Gernand, Cable, WI.


He was preceded in death by 2 infant daughters, Eva and Maria; 2 sons, Walter J. and Jerome D. Gernand; 1 son-in-law, Ron Leingang; 5 brothers, Fredrick, William, Woodrow, Anthony, and Jerome; 2 sisters, Marie Hayes and Rosalie Griffith; 1 great grandson, Ian Tryon-Anderson.
