Obituary

Violet M. Payne, 83, of Regent, North Dakota, passed away at her home on August 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Violet Hartman was born in Hettinger, North Dakota, to Chester and Edith Hartman and was raised in Mott, North Dakota.

On May 26, 1962, Violet married the love of her life, Clinton Payne. The couple began their life together in Regent, where they welcomed their first daughter. They later moved to New Rockford, where two additional daughters were born. In 1965, the family relocated to Washington State before returning to the Payne family farm near Regent in 1970, where they welcomed their youngest daughter.

Violet's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. She worked alongside Clinton and their daughters on the family dairy farm, helping build a life centered on hard work and family values. Later, she was employed at the Regent Co-op Store, where she faithfully served the community for many years. In retirement, Violet found happiness in gardening, camping, and traveling to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kindness, unwavering love for her family, and the countless lives she touched.

Violet is survived by her four daughters: Tammy Covert of Regent, North Dakota; Carrie (Mark) Hassebrock of Frederick, Colorado; Cindy (Craig) Nickel of Billings, Montana; and Debbie (Eric) Krebs of Jamestown, North Dakota. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brady (Kirsti), Brandi (Bob), Haley (Pat), Hayden (Cheyenne), Holden, Shaunna, Paige (Jake), Ethan, and April (Josh); twelve great-grandchildren; her sister, Doris (Earl) Rafferty; her brothers, Irvin Hartman, Duane (Mary) Hartman, and Terry (DeeAnn) Hartman; her brothers-in-law, Keith Cleveland, Andy Fiedler, and Orville (Diane) Payne; her sister-in-law, Lila Gedrose; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clinton Payne; her granddaughter, Ashley Nickel; her sisters, Hazel Cleveland and Ida Fiedler; and her sister-in-law, Diane Hartman.
