VIOLA ALICE SCHATZ was born south of Antelope, ND in Stark County on July 16, 1932, the daughter of Emmanuel K. and Pauline (Heupel) Schatz.  As a young girl she grew up on the family farm near Antelope, ND, where she attended country school.  She was a housekeeper, cook, babysat for various neighbors, and was a waitress at the Blue Bird Café in Hebron, ND.

She met Ruben Hummel at a church social gathering and the two were married on December 16, 1951.  On the day of the wedding there was a snow storm, but she still became a farmer's wife and homemaker.  This union was blessed with two daughters, Nancy and Darlene.  She loved to be with her family, to garden, cook, and to help along side of her husband on the farm. She also enjoyed doing crafts, and helping with Farmers Union projects with her daughters.  She was involved in the ND Farmers Union as a leader and director, the Mott Health Food Club, the Highland Township Board as a secretary, and the Ladies Aid at church.

Viola is survived by her daughters Nancy (George) Nadvornik, Mott, ND; Darlene (Dean) Nadvornik, Dickinson, ND; grandchildren Amy, Allen, and Dale; 15 great-grandchildren, 2  great-great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild due later this year, sisters Shirley Hoffmeyer, Valley City, ND;  and Jane Mayer, Richardton, ND.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Ruben, brothers Marvin, Leo, and Harvey, sister Betty Steckler, and one great-grandchild AJ Belile.
