Vaughn Berg, 86, of Lemmon, SD passed away with his family at his side on Monday, February 9, 2026 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Celebration of Vaughn's LIfe will be Friday, June 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. MT at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon, SD.  Charlotte Kvale will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Church on Friday morning.

Vaughn Eugene Berg was born on December 20, 1939, to Oscar and Austa (Allison) Berg. He passed away on February 9, 2026.  Cremation has taken place and the family will gather this summer for a memorial service.

Vaughn's parents both homesteaded in the Lemmon area with their parents, John and Mary Berg (Adams County, ND) and Newport and Nancy Allison (White Butte).  He attended North Lemmon Grade School and Lemmon High School.  He participated in football, basketball and track, lettering in all three sports every year he was in school.  He was elected as the Homecoming Marshall in 1957 and graduated in 1958.

He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ham, in April of 1959, and they made their home in Lemmon.  Vaughn worked many jobs with the wonderful people in Lemmon including John Behrmann, Ron Dauwen, Les Thom and Ray Kolb among others.  He attended Lake Area Vo Tech for airplane mechanics.  He learned to fly at the Lemmon Airport and eventually earned commercial and instructor licenses.  In the 1980's the couple moved to his parents' farm west of Lemmon.  He continued to work in the area while building his herd of Angus cattle.  While never a horseman, he loved his Belgian mares, Meg and Maude.  He was never without a dog in the pickup or a couple of cats in the house.

Vaughn dearly cared for his family - his parents, sisters, brothers and sisters-in-laws, children and especially his Ruthie - with heartfelt devotion.  He had a healthy work ethic that he made certain to pass along to his children.  He had a quiet joy in seeing their accomplishments and successes.  He loved the Lemmon area and its people.  No one was a stranger for long around Vaughn.  He loved visiting with anyone he encountered.

He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Austa, sisters Marcella (Ernest Eid) and Ardis (Ralph Severson) and his infant brother, John.  He is survived by his wife Ruth, six children – Shaun (Greg Daniel) of Sioux Falls, SD; Teresa (Greg Babbe) of Papillion, NE; Melissa ( Bill O'Donnell) of Minneapolis; Morgan (Laurie Hantz) of Lemmon; Wade (Lesley Brandenburg) of Huron and Vanessa of Hettinger; 14 grandchildren (who were always ready to do him a favor)– Stuart, Elizabeth and William Daniel; Greer and Catherine Babbe; Allison and Warren Berg; Troy and Melissa Berg; Joey, Oscar, Linwood, Victor and Marcella Perkins; and 6 great-grandchildren – Roun, Audrey, Emma, Evelyn, Eleonora and Sophie.
