Tobias Henry Hintz was born Sept. 19, 1915 at Zap, (Mercer Co.) ND to Emanuel and Mary (Kraft) Hintz. He attended school in Zap and graduated from High School there. His father died when Toby was three and he worked for a veterinarian for his board during those school years. He then worked and attended Minot Bible College, Minot ND and later came to study at the Bible College in Lemmon.

It was there he met Irene Sorg of the south Meadow area. They were married on July 15, 1938 at Red Elm, SD. They began their life together in Lemmon where Toby worked for Anderson's Plumbing. His true calling was in the ministry, but had to make a living for his family as a carpenter, mason and in ranching. Even at later age, he would gladly hand out a sermon to family and acquaintances. He knew his Bible from cover to cover and would quote scripture from memory.

In the early 1950's they moved to a place south of Meadow, where they raised their family. It was while ranching there that he, Bernadette Rose and Cleone Miles organized the Rough N Ready 4-H Club. He and that club put together the first 4-H Rodeo in Faith, SD.

In 1964, Toby and Irene moved to Eagle Butte, SD where he taught carpentry for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He and his Native American crew built many homes all across the reservation. He was affiliated with the Church of God and an honorary member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

They retired in Eagle Butte in 2002 and continued to live there until the past month when he entered Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, ND. He passed away there Sunday night, May 20, 2007 at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 1 day.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Carole (Tom) Sternad of Faith; sons, Gene Hintz of Colorado Springs, CO, Dennis (Judy) Hintz, Dickinson, ND, eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
