Terry James Dauwen was born on February 14, 1946 in Webster, SD, to Ray and Mary (Maher) Dauwen.  Growing up Terry lived in Corson County, SD and attended grade school at the Buell School and in Morristown, SD.  Terry attended high school in McIntosh, SD and Lemmon, SD, graduating from Lemmon High in 1964.

Terry joined the 211th Engineer Bridge Company of the South Dakota National Guard based out of Lemmon in 1966.  Terry was a member of the National Guard until 1972 when he was given an honorable discharge.

Terry James married Caroline Marie Mattern on September 23, 1967 at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church in McIntosh, SD.  They made their home during their 52 years of marriage in Lemmon.  Caroline and Terry were blessed with two daughters, Karren Rae, born on May 5, 1968 and Robyn Marie, born on October 17, 1974.

Terry worked at the Lemmon Equity Exchange for over twenty-five years and then became a feed salesman and consultant for Harvest States Feed Company until retirement.  Terry also had a hobby farm where he raised cattle and horses on a ranch North of Lemmon. He loved working with animals and bailing hay.  He enjoyed taking his girls and later his grandchildren out to the farm to ride horses.

Terry and Caroline had a cabin at Shadehill Lake for many years.  Terry spent many hours on the lake fishing!  Terry was famous for his wild and crazy tube rides behind his boats.  His smile was the biggest if he could make the tube get some air and if his riders were dumped off the tube.  Both Terry and Caroline enjoyed having family and friends stop by for a visit on the deck or for a boat ride or to share in Terry's famous cabin breakfasts.  But they were most happy when the kids and grandkids came to visit!

Terry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and The Sons of the American Legion in Lemmon.

Grateful for having shared in his life were his wife, Caroline, two daughters, Karren (Brian) Thompson, Robyn (John) Bertolotto, six grandchildren, Hope Thompson, Madison (Kyle) Irwin, Mariah (Kyle) Gerding, Karissa Thompson, Tagen (Allison) Bertolotto and Tate Bertolotto:  6 great grandchildren, Gavin, Easton, Lincoln and Hattie Irwin, Landen Thompson and Kohen Gerding; his siblings:  Judy (Dave) Anderson, Ronnie (Susie) Dauwen, Jane (Rick) Nelson, Doug Dauwen, Wally Dauwen and Scott Dauwen; sister-in-law Susan Dauwen and his brother-in-laws and sisters-in-laws: Paulette Fanning, John Mattern, Joel Mattern, Betty (Derry) Meyer, Marla (John) Hausauer, Jerry Mattern and numerous nieces, nephews, Godchildren and friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his wife Caroline Dauwen, his parents Ray and Mary Dauwen and  brother, David Dauwen, father and mother-in-laws Peter and Gladys Mattern, brothers-in-laws Butch Fanning and Jef Mattern and sister-in-law Rhonda Mattern.
