Shirley Ann (Overland) Drum was born March 25, 1937, in Faith, SD to Freeman (Dewey) Overland and Ruth Viola Phillips. She was the 4th of 8 children and spent her childhood days growing up near Opal, SD. She graduated from Faith High School in 1955 and attended Business College in Omaha, NE. She received her teaching certificate from Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish, SD.
Zearl and Shirley were married in Faith, SD on June 2, 1957 and cherished 52 years together. They made their home on their ranch north of Faith where they raised three children.
She taught at several country schools over the years, including the Albee School, Fox Ridge School, and Cottonwood School. When her children were older, she returned to work as a librarian at Faith High School. In later years, Shirley worked as a clerk at Thompson Drug. She enjoyed her job so much that she retired three times.
Shirley was baptized in 1963 and was a part of the church family at the Faith Church of Christ. She enjoyed teaching children's Sunday school and helping with Vacation Bible School.
After struggling with kidney disease, she received a kidney transplant in 1984. She made many trips with family and friends to Mayo Clinic. She was blessed to have kept the donated kidney for 25 years.
She was happiest when she was spending time with her family and friends. Home was with Zearl on the ranch and she loved sitting and visiting over a "cup of coffee" and just being together with those she loved. She loved her flowers, gardening, and most of all spoiling her grandchildren.
Shirley went to heaven on July 20, 2009, with her family by her side.
She will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years, Zearl Drum, Faith, SD; two daughters, Darla (Calvin) Chapman, Faith, SD, Janna Streleck and Bernt Askildsen, Rapid City, SD; one son, Gary (Karleen) Drum, Faith, SD; nine grandchildren, Nathan Helms (Hannah Heinzerling), Alanna Chapman, Jeff (Sarah) Chapman, Jenna Streleck, Nicole Streleck, Ashley, Garret, Seth and Megan Drum; one great-grandchild on the way; brothers and sisters, Clayton Overland, Wayne (June) Overland, Norma (Melvin) Hauser, Barbara (Richard) Isaacs, Jack (Kay) Overland, and Pearl Strong; along with many nieces and nephews.
