Obituary

Sheldon Dannenfelzer , 67, of Hetinger, ND passed away at the St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND on March 20, 2014.

Service of Rembrance will be Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church. Rev. Kathleen Dettmann and Rev. Richard Wyman will officiate.

Sheldon was born April 23, 1946 in Lemmon, SD, to parents Elmer and Alma (Olson) Dannenfelzer . In 1950 the family moved to Regent, ND and it was there that he would receive his Grade School education. In December 1959 Elmer and Alma, along with sons Marvin and Sheldon , made the move to Hettinger, ND. Sheldon immediately was added to the roster of the Jr. High basketball squad and helped the team to a 1st place finish at the Bowman Tournament. During his years at Hettinger High he lettered in football, basketball and track. As a senior he was All-Conference in football and basketball and was the Captain and leading scorer of the Shooting Stars in their first year in Class A. He was also an excellent trombone player and received recognition at both the District and State Music Festivals for his solo performance. He continued to play trombone for many years as a member of the Hettinger Cowboy Band. Sheldon also participated in class plays, men's chorus, mixed chorus, student council, school newspaper as sports editor and was President of the Class of 1964.

During the summer months Sheldon played Junior Legion Baseball and was a participant in 2 state tournaments. He continued his baseball career with the Hettinger Bears and then it was time for slow pitch softball. He played 1st base for the Last Resort Old Pro Softball team that placed 4th at the State Tournament in Minot and held the distinction as the heaviest group of infielders to set foot on the field at one time. Sheldon's other interests included camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, golf and being a member of Boy Scout Troop 45. He especially enjoyed camping trips to the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Banff, Alberta that included fishing and golf. After taking up golf at the age of 20, Sheldon became a low handicap golfer and was the Men's Club Champion numerous times at the Hettinger County Club. As a young boy he took up fishing and that interest carried forward. One of his favorite meals was his mother's pan fried bullheads.

In his early adult life Sheldon hunted deer, antelope, waterfowl and upland game. His best times were the pheasant hunts. In the early years he loved to hunt with his faithful Springer Spaniel, Brandy. In later years he became the #1 poster for his hunting group as he never strayed to far from the warm vehicle. His final hunt took place on January 5, 2014 when the temperature was 14 below and the wind chill was a balmy 47 below. In December 2012 Sheldon received the Sportsman of the Year Award at the annual Pheasant Fest Banquet.

Sheldon's involvement in his community included the following: Hettinger Jaycees, Hettinger Chamber, Legion Baseball Committee, Golf Association, Pheasants Forever, Pheasant Fest, Ducks Unlimited, Past Master of Hettinger Masonic Lodge #93, El Zagel Shrine, Rangers Shrine Unit, Past Worthy President of Hettinger Eagles Aerie, Park Board, City Council and Mayor of Hettinger, Church Council and President of Hettinger Lutheran.

Sheldon's best times were at the cabin on the west side of Shadehill Reservoir. He especially enjoyed the sunrises, sunsets, full moon rising and reflecting on the water, pontoon rides for fishing or pleasure, reading, doing crosswords, researching on his new I-phone, socializing with his neighbors at the lake and taking an afternoon nap. Cabin life will not be he same without his presence.

At the time of his death Sheldon was employed in sales with the Hettinger-Mobridge Candy Co. Over the years his weekly travels gained him many customer friends from Hettinger to Marmarth, New England to Elgin, Bison to Camp Crook, Faith to Eagle Butte and places in between.

Sheldon is survived by his brother, Marvin Dannenfelzer , of Hettinger, ND and his sister, Lorraine "Lori" Nieder, of Billings, MT, his step children, Shawn Frank, Jamestown, Jeff Frank, Hettinger and Tiffany Held, Minot, sister-in-law, Ruby Dannenfelzer and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Alma Dannenfelzer , one brother, Ralph Dannenfelzer , one sister, Sophie Nieder and two nephews, Jerald and Jeff Nieder.
