John Amundson will officiate and burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in New Leipzig. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 12 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. For those traveling from out of town, there is road construction on Highway 49 south of Glen Ullin.
Sharon was born March 26, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Earl Arthur and Chloe Violet (Haefner) Thies. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith in accordance with the Lutheran interpretation. She graduated from St. Louis Park High School and later from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1968. While attending Concordia College, she met her future husband, Raymond Alt, and they were married June 1st, 1968. She then went with her husband to become a farm wife in New Leipzig, North Dakota. She taught 1st grade at Mott Public School for one year, then did substitute teaching for several years while starting a family and learning the finer points of farm life.
She and Raymond were blessed with two children, Leigh Ann in 1970 and Matthew in 1974. Sharon learned to do many things on the farm: milking cows, farrowing pigs, trimming show cattle, raising and butchering chickens, driving tractor, losing tools, and responding to "can you help me for a few minutes" from Ray. After a few "equipment break downs" she was replaced in the field by her children.
She loved being a mother and did her best to raise her children in the Christian faith. She was an avid gardener, she enjoyed cooking for company, she also enjoyed sewing and reading. She was active in her church congregation, teaching Sunday School, Bible School, confirmation and Bible study. In her later years, she worked as a meat cutter for Roth's Meat Market, a cook for Jacobson Memorial Hospital and then as a cook for New Leipzig Senior Meals. She enjoyed traveling and seeing parts of God's wonderful creation as well as visiting family and friends.
Sharon always gave back to the people around her and her community. She served as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Town and Country Booster, various church women's groups, 4-H Club leader, and Oktoberfest committee. She and Ray opened their home to foreign exchange students (Naomi, Claudia, Rosana, Marcelo, Antonio), welcoming them to experience life in the U.S. while learning about their cultures and traditions.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Raymond, daughter Leigh Ann (Tab) Thompson, son Matthew (Jamie) Alt, step-daughter Agnes Blond; grandchildren Megan (Jacoby) Woehl, Jessie (Chris) Hugh, Halsey Thompson, Sidney Thompson, Jacob Alt, Levi Alt, and Jessie Alt; three great-grandchildren Mercedez, Rafael, and Ema; sister Judy Swanson, sister-in-law Ellie (Alf) Antonsen, brother-in-law Waldy (Jane) Alt, sister-in-law Marlene Alt and several nieces and nephews.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Chloe Thies, her father-in-law and mother-in-law Alexander and Emilia Alt and brother-in-law William Swanson.
