SELMA M. SCHOCK was born on October 6, 1929 in Hebron, ND. She was the oldest of five children born to Albert and Rosina (Scheuffele) Riedlinger and worked alongside her parents helping with the farm and raising her siblings. Selma attended country school northwest of Hebron near the Riedlinger farm.
She was united in marriage to August G. Schock on December 21, 1947 at Hebron, ND. They began their life together on a farm west of Raleigh where they resided until 1950. They moved to a farm north of Elgin and in 1959 to a farm six miles north of Carson. Together, Selma and August raised seven children, Rodger, Kathy, Raymond, Jerry, Bobby, Rita, and Linda. Selma was a great role model in taking care of the kids and the house and was a hard working farm wife and understood how hard the farm work was and how many hands it takes to make it all work.
In 1972, they sold the farm and moved into Carson where August worked in the grain elevator and did police work in Solen and Regent, ND. In July of 1977, August started working for the City of Elgin as a Police Officer and moved into Elgin that October.
August and Selma lost their home in the tornado on July 4, 1978. They rebuilt their home that fall. August passed away on December 24, 1984. Selma began working under the Green Thumb Program at the Elgin City Hall and then at the hospital. She then became a permanent employee of the Jacobson Memorial Hospital where she worked in the Medical Records office. This job brought into her life much joy and happiness that she worked there until age 80 when she retired. In 2010, she moved into an apartment and later on the Jacobson Memorial Care Center where she enjoyed the residents and that staff that provided care for her.
Selma enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and doing craft work.
