Samantha Jade Kling, 35, of Spearfish, SD, passed away on September 11th, 2025 at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Samantha's visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18th from 1-4pm at the funeral home in Lemmon, SD. Her rosary and family service will begin at 5pm Thursday evening at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, September 19th at 11am at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Samantha (Sam) Jade Kling was born to parents Lea (Landis) and Dennis Kling on February 9th, 1990, in Hettinger, ND. She grew up on the family ranch south of Thunderhawk, SD. Growing up she enjoyed camping and fishing along the Grand River near the family's home. In December of 1991, Sam gained a brother, Dylan. They attended Center country school; a one room country school 8 miles east of the ranch.
After 8th grade, she attended Lemmon High School, graduating with the Class of 2008. During high school she had many friends who she still held close. While in high school she enjoyed participating in volleyball and track and taking stats for wrestling and basketball.
After high school she went on to attend Black Hills State University and earned degrees in Business Administration and Human Resource Management. While in college she made many lifelong friends and fell in love with the beauty of the Black Hills. Upon graduating in 2012, she took a job at Freshstart gas station in their corporate office. While working there she met Gary McCoy and his three children, Alison, Gary Jr., and Kenzie, who she loved like they were her own.
In 2017 they moved from Spearfish to a cabin they had remodeled up in the hills outside of town. It was there that Porter James and Carter Lee were born. The mountain life brought her and the kids endless joy. Sam, Gary, and the kids had many adventures, and they loved taking the kids camping, fishing, hiking, or doing anything outdoors. Thrifting and rummage saling was another favorite past time- she loved finding a good deal.
Sam was always one to jump in and cook a quick meal or snack. She liked to try new recipes. Good conversation and good food made her happy. In her spare time, she enjoyed putting together a good puzzle. It kept her busy with two little boys always willing to help. She participated in a puzzle exchange to keep her puzzle stash fresh.
Sam was always a member of her local Catholic church. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's in Lemmon. Raising the boys in the faith was always important to her.
After having Porter, she started work at Mountain View Elementary School so she could spend more time with the kids. The staff at Mountain View became like family over the years.
Grateful for having shared in her life are Dennis and Lea Kling; brother, Dylan (Larissa) Kling; Gary McCoy; children, Carter (4), Porter (7), Gary Junior (14), Kenzie (12), Alison (16); nieces, Hazel (7) and June Kling (6); nephew, Walter Kling (3); numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and in-laws, Lora Winton, Christopher Gengler, and family.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Bernard and Katie Kling; maternal grandmother, Connie Schiley; grandfather Donald and Dawn Landis; and Uncles Don, Roy (RJ), and Doug.
All of Samantha's family and friends are encouraged to sign her online guestbook.
