Obituary

Sally (Celestine)(Weiler) Slater (91) of Hettinger passed away on December 20, 2018 surrounded by family at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, North Dakota.   Sally was born in Schefield, North Dakota on August 25, 1927 and was the last surviving child of the ten children born to George and Geniveve Weiler.  Passing before her were brothers and sisters; Frank, Catherine, Nickadmus, Joseph, Louie, Casper, George, Magdalene and Valentine. Also preceding her in death was her beloved husband Paul G. Slater and daughter Connie Enerson.

Sally grew up in the Schefield Area and loved to spend time with her best friend Barbara Weiler.  She was a lifetime member of the St. Pius Catholic Church.  She talked many times about going to dances in the little town of Lefor.  One weekend she stayed with her sister Maggie near Haynes, ND and met Paul.  They were married in 1948 in New England, ND and moved to build their life on the Slater homestead and began farming and raising a family.  To this union was born six children: Kenny (Williston, ND), Larry (Hettinger, ND), Connie (Rod) Enerson, (Hettinger, ND), Alan (Fargo, ND), Lori (Jeff) Trautwein (McMinnville, TN), and Mark (Laura) also of Hettinger. Paul's brother, Martin Slater farmed next to us when he was widowed; his daughter Gayle (Rapid City, SD) became another daughter to Sally.  In addition there were many nieces and nephews who were also special to Aunt Sally.

Sally loved her grandchildren and she is survived by Rhonda and Brian Wick and children (Fargo), Scott Enerson (Sweden), Nicky and Justin Roberts and children (Belfield), Tania Slater and Dave (Bismarck), Joey Slater (Belfield), Paige Slater (Fargo), Marshall Slater (Fargo), Garett and Stephanie Slater (Minneapolis) Brooke and Matt Schneider (Hettinger) and Kaylee and Alex Kalmbach of Rapid City, Amy Finck of Watertown, SD and Danny Schwindt of Belfield.

In addition Sally worked at Laura's daycare and became the honorary Grandma to many more children.

While Paul and Sally farmed, Sally was also active in supporting the auxiliaries of the American Legion, Eagles, 40-8, Hettinger Catholic Daughters, VFW, and was also active with the Farmers Union and made time for monthly club meetings and an occasional "bunko" game.  You could count on Sally being at the Charm Salon every Friday to get her hair done.  She worked hard for her fun money – butchering chickens, selling eggs, cream and even baking and decorating wedding cakes.  Sally also assisted on the election board and worked at social services helping the elderly by visiting and making their life easier.

Sally did not get the privilege of going to school beyond the 8 th grade.  She kept the house full of books and taught herself.  She was the farm accountant and also ensured her children were well educated and independent.  She never missed a school event-even for her grandchildren.

The food Sally made was legendary.  Every meal was made with love cream, sugar and family!  There was never that something wasn't fresh baked.  Borscht soup, crazy cake, schupf noodles, kraut nip, kuchen, raised donuts, homemade noodles, sausage and the list can go on and on.  We estimate if we had proof she would be in the Guinness World Records for most potatoes peeled and mashed!

Paul and Sally were married for 39 years when Paul was killed in a farm accident in 1989.  Sally stayed strong and always held true to the lifestyle they built.  Everyone was always welcome at the farm, come as you are, just come hungry.  There was laughter and jokes and maybe some "gin rummy".   Sally stayed at the farm until 2015 when she needed assistance and moved into the Western Horizons Care Center.  She was well taken care of and once again, her donut recipe was put on the menu.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church followed by a Rosary at 7:00 PM.

A mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 28 th at 10:00 AM officiated by Father Zins at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  Burial will be in the Hettinger Cemetery next to her husband Paul.
