Obituary

Rose Regina Scherr Cornella, long-time resident of Hettinger, North Dakota, passed away ten days before her 98 th birthday on May 11, 2023, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Rose was born in Strasburg, North Dakota on May 21, 1925. Her grandparents were of German-Russian heritage, having emigrated from the Odessa region. She first attended country school in Chandler Township, north of Haynes, North Dakota. During the depression, her family lived outside of Lemmon, South Dakota, where she attended grade school. She began high school in Haynes, where she played basketball, and later attended high school in Hettinger.

While at a high school dance she met her future husband Edward Charles Cornella. They were married by a navy chaplain in San Bruno, California on February 5, 1945, where they lived while Edward completed his service in the US Navy. They returned to the Lodgepole, South Dakota and Hettinger area, where they lived until 2003. Edward and Rose worked together in their petroleum business, Ed's Skelly Bulk, while they raised their children Alton, Brenda, and Jeffrey. She also drove a country school bus, often accompanied by her beloved dog Bruno. Rose worked for many years at Anfinson's Fleet Wholesale of Hettinger as a bookkeeper and clerk. Local farmers and ranchers were appreciative of Rose's competence and kindness in both business roles. Following the death of Edward in 2003, Rose moved to Rapid City, South Dakota to be closer to family.

In her almost 98 years of life, Rose saw remarkable changes, starting with going to grade school in a horse drawn buggy, living through the Great Depression, World War II, and then the space/computer ages.

Rose was an amazingly devoted mother and grandmother. She gave generously of her love and time to loved ones. She was always there whenever help was needed, and attended countless programs, recitals, and events. She was always up for an adventure or trip, whether it was by car, plane, or motorhome. She showered people with her hospitality and delicious homemade food. No one ever left her home with an empty stomach or heart. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and was proficient at crossword puzzles.

Rose had an incredible knack for making those around her feel special. She always made a point of learning people's names and made strangers feel like friends. She was incredibly kind and performed countless acts of love, and as a result was well loved by many. She made a significant impact on those who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Rose is survived by her son Alton (Mariette), daughter Brenda Wolf, and youngest son Jeffrey (Kathryn) and grandchildren: Nathanael Wolf, Scott Cornella (Danielle), Terry Cornella (Rachel), Allison Hanson (Dan) and Johnathan, Krystiana, Julia, Joseph, and Kiara Cornella. Rose is survived by eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Rose will be held at the Holy Catholic Trinity Church in Hettinger, North Dakota on Wednesday May 24, 2023, at 11:00 am with Father Raphael Obotama officiating. Burial will be in the Hettinger Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
