Obituary

Rosalie Chasteen, 84, of Hettinger, ND passed away peacefully at the Western Horizon's Care Center in Hettinger, ND on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Cremation has taken place and services are pending with Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger, ND.

Rosalie "Rose" Swanson Chasteen aka "Mama, Granny, Nena, and Mama Rose" 84 years old of Hettinger, ND and formerly from Southport NC, was born December 13, 1938.  She passed away peacefully at the Western Horizon's Care Center on October 3, 2023.  She fought so many battles over the years and would rally back like it was nothing but finally had to give in to the things that caused her doctor to call her "complex" and "The Energizer Bunny" more than once.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Mary Swanson, her son William "Billy" Fred Chasteen, Jr., two grandsons Dillon Patrick Creech and Randall Derrick Price, son-in-law David Allen Warren, Sr., and last, but not least her very precious cat "Patches".

Rose is survived by her 3 daughters Connie Chasteen Creech [Richie], Bonnie Chasteen Warren, and Paula Chasteen Lewis [John], daughter-in-law Audri Chasteen, 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Aaron Creech (Haley & Elijah), Amanda Creech (Jaxtin), Mary [Julian] Rodriguez, (Desiree) Ayden, (Sierra) Ocean, & Demarcus, Tracy [Dan] Wilson (Alyssa), David [Desiree] Warren, Jr., (Malcom, Zackary), William "Buddy" Fred Chasteen, III, Jesse Price (Justin), John [Elizabeth] Lewis, Jr. (Jaxon, Emerson), Randi [Justin] Shoberg, and Laci [David] Woodward (Hanah, Emily, Maxx, Izzabelle,& Lidea).  There are many others that were not truly her children or grandchildren, but she claimed them as such and hopefully they will always know that.

Rose was the best Mama, Granny, and friend. She touched many lives throughout her life including her co-workers, girl scouts, and all her children's friends.  Her passion was being there for whoever needed it at the time.  She loved with her whole heart but wasn't afraid to let you know if she thought you were making the wrong choices. She sang in church, helped children/teens become their best self, loved to laugh, and loved and lived life to its fullest. Some of the other things she loved were reading, sewing (making our clothes when we were young including prom and bridesmaid dresses), cooking, making gingerbread houses & sleighs (for everybody that she knew or that her kids knew!) and let's not forget how much she loved her Chinese food that some of her "ND kids" would always bring to her when they went to eat.  She also loved a good thrift store especially The Clothes Closet and yard sales. It was a time for family to see who could find the best deal and have wonderful conversation.  Time well spent every time.

What gives us peace is Mama's favorite article regarding end of life.

"Dear Annie:

I'm so glad you brought up the end-of-life plan dilemma faced by "Aunt Thelma, Uncle John and Marie."  I am a doctor, and my patients have universally embraced my own end-of-life plan as follows:

If you can fix me, please do.  If you can't fix me, please help me avoid pain, fear, lack of air, hunger, nausea, thirst, loss of dignity and prolonging the dying process.  I understand it might take a few days to figure out whether you can fix me or not.

This format helps facilitate conversation between generations without the feeling of abandonment.  Most of us old folks don't fear death as much as the process of dying or prolonged disability."  John R. Dykers Jr., M.D.

Rest easy Mama your work here is done.  We will love you forever and always!

A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
