Roderick "Rick" Holzkamm, age 58, of Horse Creek Township, SD, passed away on Sunday morning, August 11, 2024, at the Good Samaritan St. Vincent's Nursing Home in Bismarck, ND after a brief battle with Metastatic Melanoma.

Service of Remembrance will be Monday, August 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. MT at the United Methodist Church in Hettinger, ND.  Rev. Paul Lint will officiate.  Following a time of fellowship and luncheon, burial will follow at the Golden Valley Cemetery south of Reeder, ND.

Roderick "Rick" Lynn Holzkamm was born in Hettinger, ND to Frederick "Fred" and Marylou (Olson) Holzkamm on December 25, 1965. His mother always said he was the most special Christmas gift she'd ever received. Rick grew up on a farm south of Reeder, ND as the middle child with his sister and three brothers. He always had a love for animals, especially cattle, and really enjoyed hunting with his coon hounds.

Rick graduated from Reeder High School with the class of 1984, and from Bismarck Junior College with a degree in Auto Mechanics in 1986. He worked at the Reeder Cenex Station as a mechanic for over ten years before transitioning into a full-time rancher over time. He had a series of mechanic jobs over the years as he was building his family and his cattle herd, including at RZ Motors in Hettinger and Perfection Tire in Newport, WA. He was a talented mechanic and hard worker, and always claimed that his mechanical ability "came in real handy" when attempting to build a ranching business.

He married Bekki Ellen Franklund on October 3, 1998, after a brief courtship. After over 25 years together, his wife is still amazed as she never saw him decide on anything that quickly again. They spent the first year or so after their marriage in Newport, WA, and their first child was born in Washington State. In 2000, they relocated back to the Hettinger/Reeder area, and were blessed to move onto the Bob and Helen Lewis ranch in 2001 to begin their own Angus ranch. They had four children: Elizabeth was born in 1999, Rachel in 2003, Luke in 2004, and Sarah in 2006. All of the children were close to their father and share the love of the land, the cattle, and in his abiding love of God and family.

Rick was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. He grew up in the Bethany Methodist Church in Rural Perkins County, SD, and later joined the Hettinger United Methodist Church shortly before marriage. He filled many roles in the church over the years, displaying his quiet, calm presence and his servant heart. Rick was a steward of the land and cattle, and a wise steward of finances. He was a genuine, kind man and had a rich prayer life. Rick was a man who spent time with the Lord every morning and followed his Bible Study with a hearty breakfast of eggs, breakfast meat, toast, and coffee nearly every day, often before sunrise. He loved to make breakfast for his family, but only if you were up early enough to join him.

He was known as a kind, genuine man who would never say a bad word about anybody. Rick was a loyal friend, family member, and church member, and he still had close friends from elementary school who still call him "Ricky". His children's friends nicknamed him "Ricky Bobby", and he got a kick out of having as many teenagers as possible come over to hang out with Ricky Bobby and Mama Beks.

Rick is survived by his parents Fred and Marylou, his siblings Arv and Lori Lachowitzer, Rod and Teri, Michael, Lynn and Wende, and all of their children. He is also survived by his in-laws Mark and Maretta Franklund, Jason and Keri Youngstrand, Justin and Cami Enney, Grandmother in-law Alice Falkenstein, and all of their children. Last, but not least, he is survived by his wife, Bekki, their children Elizabeth Holzkamm, Alex and Rachel Martinez and their newborn baby Beau Roderick, Luke, and Sarah Holzkamm, as well as many cousins and special friends. Rick was preceded in death by his grandparents, his niece Robyn Holzkamm, his cousin Tyler Olson, and many members of the family of his heart from the Bob and Helen Lewis family.

In the last days of his life, he was surrounded by family and friends, the spirit of the Lord, and was blessed to have met his first grandson who bears his name who was born just days before his death. We are comforted to know that God is sovereign over every detail and that Rick is no longer in pain, but is with his Savior forever.
