Obituary

Rodney L. Horn went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer on July 12th, 2007. He died at the Fort Meade V.A. Medical Center in Sturgis.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Sunday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, SD. Funeral Services will be held 10:30am Monday at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche with Pastor Paul Howard officiating. A time of food and fellowship with the family will follow in the church hall. Burial is scheduled for 1:30 pm Monday at the Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis with Military Honors provided by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard. Memorials are requested to the Christian Life Center Youth.

Rod Horn was born July 1, 1936 at the Bowdle Hospital in Bowdle, SD to Donald R. Horn and Mildred L. (Hoven) Horn of Selby, SD. He attended grade school and was raised by grandparents, Ben B. & Lillian E. Hoven of Selby. Upon the death of his grandfather, Rod moved to Aberdeen, SD where he graduated from high school in May 1954.

Following a two year US Army tour of duty in Korea, Rod enrolled in South Dakota State University. While in college, Rod was active in and held offices in Vets Club, Economics Club, Ag Club, and Rodeo Club and was a member of the SDSU Rodeo Team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in June 1961. During Rod's time with the Rodeo Club at SDSU, he met Karen Haberman. They were later married in Aberdeen on August 1, 1962.

After graduation Rod worked for the Aberdeen Production Credit Association as Field Man and later as Loan Officer for four years. In the fall of 1965 he transferred to Northwest South Dakota Production Credit Association home office in Lemmon, SD. What started out to be a possible two year assignment, grew into over twenty years because Rod and Karen loved the community, admired the people and considered Northwest South Dakota to be the "best place in the world" to raise a family. At a time of merger and termination of service, Rod Horn held the position of President and CEO of Northwest South Dakota PCA.

In the fall of 1985 Rod, Karen and kids moved to Belle Fourche, SD and pursued interests as they arose. Interests included ownership of ladies clothing and shoe stores in Belle Fourche, Lemmon, Timber Lake and the Mall in Lead, SD. He also held ownership of Horn Real Estate and still later as a shareholder in Help U Sell Real Estate of the Black Hills with headquarters at Spearfish and an office in Belle Fourche, SD.

Rod and Karen became members of the Christian Life Center just weeks after moving to town and have been blessed with continuous spiritual growth throughout the remainder of life. During the 21+ years, Rod has held the position of Elder or Deacon for 11 years and as Church Treasurer for 14 years. Rod's "Home Going" is with love and admiration for the many close friends who shared life in Belle Fourche and the Tri-State Area.

Survivors include his wife, Karen, one daughter Renae (Steve) Schaeffer, two sons, Tyler (Karol) Horn and Garrett (Amanda) Horn along with nine precious grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by both parents and grand parents.
