Rock J. Seiler was born October 5, 1961, in Lemmon, SD to George J. Jr. and Rose (Nehl) Seiler. He attended McIntosh Grade School and graduated from McIntosh High School with honors in 1980. He was a four-year letterman in basketball and football, where he played alongside his brothers and close friends. He was a member of the basketball team that competed in the Regional Basketball Tournament in Rapid City in 1979, where they were ultimately defeated in four overtimes. Rock was also the Homecoming King of his senior class.
After graduation, Rock attended South Dakota State University on a football scholarship, transferring after one semester to Black Hills State University. Rock played for 4 years on the Yellow Jackets' Football Team as a fullback. He was selected as Most Valuable Offensive Player and the team's Most Valuable Player, by fellow teammates. Rock received his BS in Business Administration with a minor in Computer Programming.
After graduating from BHSU, Rock worked at Pope and Talbot in Spearfish and later at Montana Power in Colestrip, MT. He married his college sweetheart, Sharline Kymala on December 27, 1986 in Spearfish, SD.
In 1987, Rock and Shar moved home to the family ranch in McIntosh, SD where he worked along side his best friend, and father, George Seiler Jr. The two ranched and farmed together for 26 years. Rock and Shar purchased the family ranch from George and Rose in 2010. Rock's pride and joy was his life on the ranch, raising cattle, and being a faithful steward of the land. He rarely took time away from the ranch because he loved what he did, and he did what he loved.
Above all, his greatest pride and joy was his children; Brittany (31 years), Drew (26 years) and Nathan (25 years). Quality time was spent supporting his children in their academic and athletic activities, especially basketball. The kids spent many hours playing one-on-one with their father, never once defeating him. He also coached the McIntosh Boy's Basketball team from 2008-2010. He was a diehard Minnesota Viking's fan to the end, SKOL! He had a passion for hunting, being outdoors, and riding motorcycles. He taught his children the value of hard work, being respectful, and leading by example. He was a loving father, husband, brother and friend. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.
Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife Shar of 29 years, McIntosh, SD; 2 sons, Nate, Spearfish, SD and Drew, McIntosh, SD; daughter and son-in-law, Brittany and Kevin DiVerde, Brandon, SD; his mother, Rose Seiler, McIntosh, SD; 4 sisters, Janet (Joe) Mollman, McIntosh, SD, Connie (Jeff) Maier, Morristown, SD, Jane Schwagler, Mandan, ND and Kristi (Jim) Lane, Harlowton, MT; four brothers, Terry Seiler, Roberts, MT, Tom Seiler, Spencer, SD, Greg (Karen) Seiler, Ely, NV, Jeff (Dawn) Seiler, Aberdeen, SD; his in-laws, Veanna Kymala, Spearfish, SD; Larry (Ann) Kymala, Whitewood, SD; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Seiler Jr., and brother-in-law, Darrin Schwagler.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
