ROBERT BRADFORD SHAPLAND was born on March 26, 1916 in Sutton, Nebraska to Lester B. and Erna E. (Wenzlaff) Shapland. Robert and his parents moved to Crosby, ND where he graduated from High School in 1934. Bob continued his education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, graduating in 1939. After graduating, Bob joined the US Army. While he was at the University, he met the love of his life, Jean Elizabeth Smith and they were united in marriage at Ft. Lewis, WA on July 20, 1940 where he was a young Lieutenant under the command of General Eisenhower.

Bob and Jean were stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They were separated for two weeks during this time, neither knowing if the other was alive. They returned to Hettinger, ND in the late 1940's and ran Fitch Motor Company. Bob and Jean spent their last 25 years, wintering in Texas. They enjoyed traveling throughout the US and also went to Europe until ill health kept them home. Bob was an avid golfer, loved bowling, cooking, playing piano and spending time with his family. His wife Jean passed away in March of 2003. Bob was a member of the American Legion, the Mason's, the Hettinger Chamber of Commerce, the Shriner's, the Eagle's and the Elk's. Bob and Jean joined the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hettinger in 1954 and were devoted members ever since.

Bob Shapland passed from this life on November 9, 2005 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Maree (Greg) Jorgensen, Cindy (Delwayne) Olson, all of Hettinger, ND and Nancy (Bruce) Kollmann, of Albany, OR; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Preceding Bob in death were his parents, his wife Jean and one infant son.
