Robert Haines' Obituary
Robert G. Haines age 88 of Belle Fourche, died Thursday December 1st, 2005 at his home in Belle Fourche.
A public visitation will be held 10am to 12 noon on Thursday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. At 1 pm there will be a chapel service held at the Black Hills National Cemetery, in Sturgis with military honors provided by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard.
Robert Ginkens Haines was born November 20, 1917 in Craig Colorado. He was the son of Ray and Artie (Ginkens) Haines. Robert spent most of his young life in Mullen Nebraska where he graduated from high school in 1935. Soon after graduation he joined the Army Air Corps and was a member of the 51st Pursuit Group in California when World War II began. For 2 ½ years he was stationed at the Karachi Airfield in India. In 1946 he was honorably discharged and on September 20, 1947 he married Twila Lee Mickey in Centerville Iowa. Following their marriage they farmed for a year, before Robert was recalled into the Air Force in 1948. He served four additional years as an Atomic Weapons Inspector. In 1953 Robert and Twila moved to Rapid City where Robert worked with his brother at the Alto Armature, an auto-electric shop. In 1954 he began work as an accountant for Tri-State Milling Company and he worked there 15 years. In 1969 he worked a short time for the state of South Dakota as an auditor, and then as City Auditor for Belle Fourche for 13 years, retiring in 1982. Twila died July 21, 1998.
Robert had been Secretary for the 51st Fighter Group Association for many years. He helped coordinated their reunions for many years and he enjoyed putting much time into this position. He was a life-member of the National Rifle Association and a fan of the old time western music and also rodeos.
Robert is survived by his son, Jeff (Renee) of Salem OR; granddaughter, Adrienne of Tucson AZ; sister-in-law, Fern Haines of Filer ID; 2 nephews; and 2 neices.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Richard; and sister, Lorna Fowler.
