Robert George "Bob" Kowis' Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial for Robert "Bob" Kowis, 73, of Reeder, ND will be Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reeder. Fr. Joseph Chipson will officiate and burial will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary/Wake service at 7:00 p.m. all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reeder on Friday, Nov. 27.
ROBERT GEORGE KOWIS was born on July 30, 1936 in Grassy Butte, ND to Joe and Lena (Tabor) Kowis. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Grassy Butte. After his schooling he worked on the farm and learned the skill of welding and metal fabrication and repair.
On January 13, 1955 Bob was united in marriage to Ilene Mittlestadt in Killdeer, ND. He worked in the oil fields from 1955 until 1961. They moved to Dickinson, ND in 1961 where he worked at Husky Briquetting until 1973 when they moved to Reeder, ND. Bob worked for Tex Byers at Southwest Machine. In 1990 he purchased his own shop when Southwest Machine closed. In 1993, Bob sold his shop and began working in New England until retiring in 2003.
Bob continued his craft, making many windmills with his creative welding skills. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, traveling with Ilene and family, going to the casino and throwing horseshoes. He loved to hunt deer and pheasants and enjoyed hobby farming with his family and growing a garden. Bob belonged to the Reeder Fire Department and was a member of the Reeder City Council.
Bob Kowis passed away at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND on November 20, 2009.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Ilene, of Reeder, their children, Deborah (Jerry) Ostlie, Pamela (Bob) Sivak, Della (Randy) Christensen, Dean (Irene) Kowis, Allan (Rebecca) Kowis, Paulette Shafer and friend, Mark and Wally (Kara) Kowis; 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his siblings, Mary Ellen Sabrosky, Carolyn Dardis, Wally (Mary) Kowis, Stanley Kowis and friend, Bev, Kenny (Jeanne) Kowis, Delores (Jim) Bice and Donna (Neil) Grevious.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lena Kowis and three sisters, Katharyn Trotter, Annabelle Kukla and Marjorie Hanson.
A Memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
