Richard Otto Krausz was the oldest of six children born to Albert and Anna (Wiesinger) Krausz on September 3, 1925, in Plevna, MT. He moved with his family from Montana to Lemmon, SD, at the age of 14. He attended area schools until he was drafted into the US Army on May 25, 1944 at the age of 19. He was honorably discharged on the 15 th of June, 1946. He was one of the last two living WWII Veterans in the Lemmon area.
Following this he worked with his father Albert in the City Bar for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Iva Mae Hardesty on May 22, 1950 at St. Mary's Rectory in Lemmon. To this union six children were born: Russell in 1951, Raeanda in 1954, Lori in 1957, Gerald in 1959 and twins Dorene and Deanne in 1961.
Richard spent his whole life working hard for his family; working numerous jobs in the community, including John Behrman Oil and the City Liquor Store. In the late 1960's he purchased a small gas station on the south side of Hwy 12 called Dick's Service. He employed every one of his children at one time or another through the years. He was also employed with Hoff's Redi Mix during this time. After the sale of the gas station in the 1970's he went to work for Barber Transportation and later Lewis Truck Lines, retiring it to his son-in-law Ron Tomac in 1992.
He went on to work many years as the maintenance man at the Lemmon HUD Housing. During this time he also spent time hauling coal with his "sidekick" Arlin Bartels.
Dancing was Dad's passion. He enjoyed it way into his 90's. Richard was a member of St. Mary's Parish since 1947 and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus joining in 1961. Dad's Catholic Faith was very important to him through out his life.
Dad was a treasure trove of memories and information. All we had to do was ask him a question and it would spark a long wonderful conversation. At the time of his death he was residing at the Floyd Short HUD. He entered West River Regional Medical Center on December 21, 2021 where he remained until his passing on January 7, 2022.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Russ (Wendy) Lemmon, SD, and Gerald (Naomi) Minot, ND; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Raeanda Tomac, Keldron, SD, Lori (Loyson) Carda, Dorene (Ron) Bierwagen, all of Lemmon, SD, and Deanne (Doyle) Udager, Buckeye, AZ; 16 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iva; three brothers, Ervin, Edward and Joseph in infancy; two sisters, Ester Treadway Brighton and Rosemary Kane; son-in-law, Ron Tomac; grandson, Allen Tomac; and one great-granddaughter Jordan Grace Wetzel.
A memorial has been established.
In honor of Richard's military service, his grandchildren and great grandchildren currently serving in the US Military are in uniform.
