Richard Geigle, age 88, of Selfridge, ND, passed away at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND, on Friday, December 22, 2023.

Memorial services for Richard will be held at 10:00 a.m. MT on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin, SD with Pastor Justin Van Orman officiating.

Richard Henry Geigle was born March 27th, 1935, (on his mother's birthday) to Henry and Lydia (Kunz) Geigle in Sioux County, North Dakota. He was about in the middle of 14 siblings and was second to the youngest son. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Selfridge where he lived all his life. Richard attended school at the Dillman country school for grade school and then stayed in the dorm in McLaughlin for high school during the week, returning to the farm on weekends. He graduated from McLaughlin High School in 1953.

He had traveled west to help his oldest brother, Irey, move to Idaho and found work in Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and California before returning home to farm. He bought the family farm after his folks moved to McLaughlin in 1968. In 1967 he married Darlys Utecht at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLaughlin. They raised their three sons Kevin, Troy, and Jason on the farm and later raised their granddaughter Alexia too.
Richard was a very sociable person and loved attending auction sales. He also enjoyed rodeo and faithfully attended the McLaughlin and Mobridge rodeos for many years. His favorite things to watch on TV were rodeos and football. Another thing Richard loved was having coffee at area towns to visit with friends. He returned home with many jokes and enjoyed sharing them. Richard made a social event of working cattle, often helping neighbors, and exchanging labor with them. He raised small grains, hay, and Limousin cattle, finding a niche market for 4-H club calves and frequently sold them into Nebraska.

He is survived by his wife Darlys, sons Kevin (JoAnn)-children Markieta, Devin (Bobbi Jo)-children Rhett and Connor; Charles; Troy (Rowena)— children Micheal (Briana)-children Temperence, Maizie and Vernon; Alexia— children Olivia, Jessica, Misha, Mikal, and Michael; Ash, Raven, Paolo; and Jason (Tara)-children Axton, Levi, and Eden; and sisters Delores Knuth, Mae Harris and Darlene Hinson. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law..

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Iery, Gilbert, Elizabeth Huber, Elsie Huber, Alvina Tscherny, Lorraine Snyder, Violet Aman, Irene Hach, Erwin, and Herb.
