Ray was born April 8, 1921 on a farm in Mercer County near Stanton, ND. He was the youngest of 8 children born to Jacob and Josephine (Egger) Jacobs. At the age of 5 he and his family moved their cattle and all their belongings to a farm in Grant County, ND, about 14 miles north of Morristown, SD. He was a very busy boy and remembers when they arrived there a chicken flew off a nest and he discovered 2 eggs!
Ray attended school at a 1 room schoolhouse in Parks District. Julius Roe tells of the time they were walking home and a snow storm came up. Ray wouldn't let Julius stop and lay downâ?¦he even carried him some of the way home. He attended Wheeler school and stayed at Mrs. Neirsons until he completed grade school, with perfect attendance. Marie and Alice Neirson were like sisters to him. Many times when they went roller-skating other girls would ask Marie about her ""brother"".
In 1941, he went to Fort Snelling, MN to enlist into the service. But upon arriving, he was sent back home because he was the sole remaining son at home.
Ray and his nephew Robert Olson went to Carson, ND on June 18, 1945 to attend an old Setttlers picnic where he met Ollie and her daughter, Judy. A courtship followed and Ray and Ollie were united in marriage on November 22, 1945 at New Leipzig, ND. They lived in Elgin in Ollie's home and Ray did odd jobs around town. In 1946, Ray and Ollie purchased the Harry Trusdale farm 10 miles north of Morristown, SD near the Cedar River in Grant County, ND.
Ray raised milk cows, hogs and chickens. It was a busy life for them just starting out without machinery. In 1949, a dam broke upriver and the Cedar River flooded their farm. Until the water receded, they lived with his sister, Ruth and her husband, Clifford Ritz. The family then moved to their present home ½ mile north.
Over the years, Ray and Ollie expanded their farming and ranching operation and at times rented additional land. In 2002, they sold the farm to their grandson, Travis Wentz, with the understanding that they could live there as long as they wanted.
Retirement was hard on Ray as he was used to working all the time. He loved the outdoors, beautiful sunsets, the moon rising over the trees, deer, birds, pheasants, and gazing at the stars and the Northern Lights.
Since 2010, they spent winter months with their daughter, Joyce in Nebraska and summer months on the ranch. In 2012, Ray and Ollie went with their daughter Judy to her home in Nampa, ID, to spend a few weeks. While there he lost the love of his life Ollie, on October 14, 2012 due to complications from surgery. He spent a few months with his daughter, Joyce in Nebraska. Due to health reasons, he moved to Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon to be near friends and family.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith M. Main, Nampa, ID and Joyce (Hugh) Meier, Morrill, NE; grandchildren, Rocky (Monica) Morino, Nina (Zach) Pecor, Richard (Kristi) Morino, Darin (Kristina)Morino, Brenda (Troy) Grever, Scott Jacobs, Derek Jacobs, Nicolaas Jacobs, Curtis (Lisa) Wentz and Travis (Leslie) Wentz; 9 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Ollie; son, Jerry Jacobs; great-granddaughter, Abbigale Olvia Wentz; three sisters, Alice Jacobs, Ruth Ritz and Lena Olson; and four brothers, Alvin Jacobs, Walter Jacobs, Charles ""Bud"" Jacobs and William Jacobs.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
