Randy Joe Vetter was born on January 1, 1955 to Francis and Luella (Smith) Vetter in Hettinger, ND and patiently waiting at home for her "Big Little Bro" was Betty and 5 years later his "Smoothie Girl" Tamara arrived.
Randy attended Bison Elementary and graduated from Bison High School in 1973. Throughout his teenage years you never knew what kind of shenanigans he may pull or turnover like an outhouse. Randy married his first love Nancy (Veal) after High School and to this union "My 3 Sons" Jared, Tracy, and Kelly became his stars.
May 1992, he married his second love and life mate Diane along with welcoming her children Shane, Shad, Shawnda and Shelley into his life. His family became a Six Pack + 1. Randy and Diane lived on their slice of heaven "The Vetter Ranch" until October 2020 when his deteriorating health forced them to move into Bison.
Randy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cancer in 2019, which resulted in him retiring from the South Dakota Department of Transportation where he had worked for 10 years. He had previously worked for Bison Grain driving truck and numerous other hobbies, but his ultimate job was Ranching.
Woodworking was a hobby he loved and with the hand he was dealt he did not fold. He built corral sets, gun cabinets and mirrored shadow boxes for all his grandchildren and a few other special people and sealed them with his love. Pinochle was another hand that you wanted to be in on with him because he was known as "The Best Damn Partner". Randy was an exceptional mechanic and all-around jokester. You never knew what he might pull along with being able to make even a fence post talk and a seized engine hum.
Randy had surgery in November 2020 to remove a part of his small intestine. He took a turn for the worst was declared brain dead and the family made the hard decision to remove life support. Jokester that he is "Our Miracle" woke and declared "I'm hungry. Bring me something to eat!" He gave us 2 more months of his life to cherish and passed away February 4, 2021 at his home with several loved ones by his side.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Diane Vetter; his Father, Frank Vetter; Sisters Betty Nelson and Tamara (Chuck) Kilcoyne; his three sons Jared, Tracy (Megan); and Kelly Vetter (Carlee Waddell) special friend; step-children Shane (Ann), Shad (Dana) Dukat; Shawnda (Kyle) Carmichael and Shelley (Jason) Woods; grandchildren Bristen (Dillion Feist), Alex, Treyton, Tyndall Vetter; Emma, Brooke, Luke, Jada, McKenna, Kailynn Dukat; Mary, Julia, Amber, Evan Carmichael; Owen, Allie, Caleb Woods; Braden Kopren, (Honorary Grandson) and one great-granddaughter Dalayla Feist; a nephew, Rusty Nelson; and a niece, Penny Nelson; several great nephews and nieces and a boat load of special friends.
He is preceded in death by his Mother Luella Vetter, Brother-In-Law Jerry Nelson and both sets of grandparents.
Cards can be mailed to Diane Vetter, PO Box 314, Bison, SD 57620.
