Phyllis Irene (Diehl) Roth was born September 20, 1931 to Henry and Hilda (Reister) Diehl in Carson, North Dakota. When times were tough, her family lived in the town of Carson, one block from the school where her parents were custodians.  They eventually returned to their family farm just west of Carson. She attended Roosevelt Public School in Carson, graduating in three years of high school with the Class of 1948.  After high school, Phyllis attended the Bismarck Hospital's Nurses Training School, where she decided nursing was not for her. She returned to Carson to work at the Grant County Courthouse for the County Agent's office until her marriage in 1951.  Following her marriage, Phyllis took the rural teacher's exam and taught rural school at the German School No. 3.
In June of 1947, at her Cousin Eleanor's wedding to Clarence Roth, Phyllis met Paul K. Roth. Phyllis and Paul were united in marriage on October 28, 1951, in Carson, North Dakota. They farmed and ranched together on the Roth family farm raising Registered Polled Herefords. Four children were born to this union, Debbie, Marie, Tammy and Kent. During the summers of 65-68, and on many weekends in-between, her teenage cousins Fred and Tom Wirtz lived with them to help out on the farm. Years later, Paul and Phyllis were foster parents to Donna Two Bears and Dean Lutz. In 1991, Paul and Phyllis moved into Elgin. In 2006, they celebrated the Roth Family Farm as a Century farm.

Phyllis was a member of the George W. Snook Post 246 American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Ebenezer United Church of Christ.
Phyllis enjoyed gardening.  On the farm, she had huge vegetable and fruit gardens which she harvested to can or freeze the produce. She also had beautiful flower beds surround the farmhouse. When she moved to town, Phyllis brought her love of gardening with her; she transformed the backyard into many flower beds and a large produce garden. And cook. Phyllis was a good cook and baker; one never went away hungry from her table.  To Phyllis, the sharing of food with family and friends was an important part of hospitality.
While on the farm, Phyllis had many barn cats and several farm dogs.  Her affection for cats followed her to her home in town where she always had a special cat living in the house.
Surviving family members include her three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Richard Gaugler, New Leipzig, ND; Marie and Daniel Ackerman, Elgin, ND; Tammy P. Roth and Zach Lies, Morris, MN; her son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Faye Roth, Stanton, ND; eight grandchildren, Elyse (Jesse) Crouch, Emery (Holly) Gaugler, Steven (Marie) Ackerman, Danny Ackerman, James (TyAwna) Ackerman, Jacob Roth (friend Ashley Mutschelknaus), Abigail Roth and Kristian Roth (friend Kara Levorsen); five great-grandchildren, Makayla Crouch, Cadence Crouch, Carson Crouch, Ben Ackerman, and Jase Ackerman; one brother and  two sisters-in-law, Darwyn and Audrey Diehl, Carson, ND; JoAnn Diehl Lano, Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul on March 28, 2012, and one brother, Henry (Buddy) Diehl.
