Phyllis Carmenta Brixey was born Sept. 28, 1915 to C. Edward and Essie (Stelting) Brixey in Strool Township northeast of Strool in a sod covered homestead house. She was the third child of this family. She stared school in the spring when she was still five years old because her sister Iva was seven and had to go to school. They walked 3 ½ miles across the fields and prairie to the school house, which held all eight grades. Phyllis went eight more years to the North Strool School and then attended Bison High School. In 1935 her Dad borrowed money from Charley Snortland so she could go to college.
Phyllis went to Northern State Teachers College and earned a Teacher's Certificate. Her Dad helped her find a school for her to teach in and she taught one year there. The next year she taught in another rural school until the fall when she went back to Northern State College and earned her State Teacher's certificate. Phyllis then taught for four more years in the Perkins County rural schools. Next she went to Bible School in Chicago at the Evangelistic Institute. She attended there four years and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biblical Literature.
The next year she went to the Wesleyan Methodist Bible College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. While there she met the wife of the founder of the European Evangelistic Crusade. Since she was called by the Lord to go to Germany she applied to the EEC to go under their Mission to go to Germany. She was accepted and so in March of 1949 she sailed to Germany where she served five years.
Phyllis returned to South Dakota in June of 1954. She wanted to go back but her bronchial condition and other things prevented it. She spent a year in Anderson, Indiana teaching in a Christian Day School, then she spent one year in Los Angeles, CA. The next year she spent in New York City. In 1958 she returned home and taught one year and earned the money to build a small edition on the house to make a small bedroom and a bathroom. Phyllis started taking care of her Dad until his passing in 1960. Phyllis went back to teaching and retired in 1979. She bought some cows and raised calves until 1995 when she retired at the age of 80 years.
Phyllis entered the Western Horizon's Care Center in Hettinger, ND in 2011 where she went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 13, 2016.
