Obituary

Philip William Thompson, age 88, formerly of Gascoyne, ND, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND.  Memorial Services will be held at Abundant Life Assembly of God, Hettinger, ND with Pastor Allen Wickstrom officiating on Monday, September 19, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.  Burial of Philip's ashes will be at a later date in Barron, Wisconsin.

Philip was born May 4, 1934 to William and Helen (Etlicker) Thompson at Arland Wisconsin.  He was the older of 2 siblings.  Philip was educated in Barron Township, Wisconsin through grade school.  He later tested on a college entrance exam and received the highest test score to be able to attend O'Claire College, where he studied engineering.  He completed 2 years of study and then was drafted into the service and served in South Korea.

He was extremely mechanical and could fix almost any engine set before him.  He was also a man of great strength, even in his later years, even when appearing more frail, he could lift and carry some of the heaviest of boxes and he was quite innovative in how he could move heavy engines or vehicle parts.

Philip met the love of his life, Carrie Oliver, while she was living with her niece in White Lake, WI.  They would go for rides together, then married on October 13, 1981.  They moved from Wisconsin to Gascoyne, ND in 1996.  They made their home together in former church building that had been turned into a house.  Philip lovingly cared for Carrie in her ailing health as well as faithfully visiting her when she entered the Hillcrest Care Center until the time of her death in 2001.

Philip was a man of great faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He was active in his church and would help out wherever needed.  He spent many hours getting the elevator at the church operating smoothly.  He was faithful to be at every service, even driving in bad weather and roads to attend.  He was an avid reader and one of his favorite authors was Charles Finney.  If there was something that he wanted to learn about he would find a book to read up on it.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carrie, an infant sister, and numerous in-laws.  He is survived by his sister Ann May Uriel of Roswell Georgia, nieces and nephews, as well as his care-givers from recent years and his church family.
