Oscar was born on June 9, 1930, in Adams County to Gottlieb and Rose (Beck) Mattis. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Hettinger where he graduated from Hettinger High School in 1948. He entered the US Army that same year and served his duty in Tokyo, Japan as an MP. Upon completion of his duty in 1950, Oscar was fortunate to meet up with his brother, Herbert, and they passed duty in San Francisco as Herbert was being sent to Seoul, Korea during the Korean War.

After the two brothers returned from the service, they began farming together in Adams County. Oscar and Herbert shared a special bond and partnership founded on their love of farming and the land that lasted over 50 years.

Oscar was united in marriage to Bertha Kirschenmann on November 12, 1976. They resided in Hettinger where they were active members of the Assembly of God Church. Oscar loved music and would play the piano or accordion whenever given the chance. He was especially proud of his sister Arleen's talent for music and loved listening at every opportunity. Oscar was able to spend extra time with his sister Lillian recently which was a special blessing to him. Oscar enjoyed visiting with folks and was always interested in the latest farm equipment and trends. He was never seen without a comb in his shirt pocket.

Oscar is survived by his two sisters Arleen (Brad) Rice, Walla Walla, WA, and Lillian Martin, Bismarck, sister-in-law Delores Mattis, Bismarck, along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Bertha's sisters Lenora Bolyard, Folson, CA, and Rosella Tichnor, Concord, NC.
