Norman Victor Schock, 78, passed from this earth on January 6, 2018, at 5:00 a.m. MT, with his loving wife, Gloria, by his side.
Born in Elgin, North Dakota on December 5, 1939 to Arthur and Freida (Weikum) Schock, Norman spent his life on the family farm and graduated from Elgin High School in 1958. Following graduation, Norman joined the Marine Corp. He graduated from boot camp at 29 Palms, California. He went on to overseas duty, being stationed in places such as Laos, Korea, Okinawa, and served as embassy guard in Montevideo, Uruguay. After serving for six years and being honorably discharged, Norman took a job with Collins Radio Company in California. Norman worked in the accounting field while in California, but decided after a number of years to move back to Elgin. He worked with his father on the family farm, as well as doing construction jobs in the area.
On November 4, 1977, Norman married Gloria (Zimmerman) Hill and welcomed Ronald, Evelyn, and Terry Hill into the Schock family. In 1980, Norman and Gloria purchased the family farm, making it their residence for the next nine years. During that time, they were blessed to add Victor and John to the family.
In 1989, as a result of worsening arthritis, Norman could no longer work the farm that he loved and the family moved into Elgin. Norman felt compelled to contribute to the City of Elgin and served on the Elgin City Council and then was elected as the Mayor of Elgin. Over the years his arthritis continued to worsen, causing his mobility to decline, but his mind was as sharp as ever. Norman could often be heard telling stories of his time growing up on the farm with his brothers and sisters, or sharing tales of his time in the Marines. He had the most positive attitude, and even with his health issues, would always tell you, with a smile, that he was "perfect" whenever you asked how he was doing. Norman made friends easily with his sharp wit and quick smile.
Though we know he is free from the pain that burdened him these last few years, it is with heavy hearts that we continue on without him. Norman leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Gloria; their children Terry (Katie) Hill, New Jersey; Evelyn (Alan) Alt, New Leipzig, ND; Ronald (Rhonda) Hill, Jackson, GA; Victor (Patty) Schock, Bismarck, ND; and John (Tabitha Zimmerman) Schock, Bismarck, ND; sisters Alverna (Wayne) Jacobs, Huntington Beach, CA; Elaine (Don) Dvorak, Dickinson, ND; Ruby (Greg) Marthaller, Highland Ranch, CO; and his brother, Rudy (Darlene) Schock, Dickinson, ND.
Saying goodbye to Papa are his grandchildren Alex (Mara Justice) Alt, Amber and Austin Hill, Taylor Shaw, Rachel and Lindsey Schock, Madison Zimmerman, and Axel Schock. Norman was known by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Freida Schock; in-laws Emil and Lenora Zimmerman; brother-in-law Kenneth Zimmerman; nephew Michael Dvorak; and his granddaughter Abigail Alt
