Obituary

Funeral services for Norman Kvale, age 95, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Rev. Bob Edwards will officiate with burial to follow in the Greenhill Cemetery.

Norman Dallas Kvale was born September 1, 1918 to John and Hazel (Albright) Kvale in Perkins County on his mother's homestead. The family moved to his dad's homestead in 1922 where they continued to live and run the farm and ranch. Norman attended grade school at Paris School. He then attended Lemmon High School for three years. He joined the CCC and spent 1 ½ years at Camp Tigerville near Hill City. While there he finished high school and graduated from Hill City High School. Following graduation he was at Camp Rebeaux near Deadwood.

Norman returned to the family farm near Lemmon. He married Belle Walter on July 9, 1949. They raised four children Richard, Dale, Tim and Beverly. Norman served on the Corson County School Board and the Rolling Green School Board. He was leader of the West River Homesteaders 4-H Club. He served on the West Corson County Soil Conservation board of directors and on the FHA Board of Directors.

Norman was a life time member of Calvary Lutheran Church serving on the church council as a deacon and trustee. Norman, Belle and Harold were named the 2002 Lemmon Boss Cowman Honorees.

Norman was a quiet man who loved his ranch life and his family. Sundays were a day of rest for his family and they enjoyed trail rides, swimming, softball games, ice skating and sledding. He had a reputation for making perfect haystacks. He was still bucking up hay long after the neighbors were using balers. He had a love for his horses and preferred a good horse to a motorized ride. He knew his livestock and could see a cow in trouble from miles off. He continued to farm and ranch until a four wheeler accident at age 90.

Norman entered the Five Counties Nursing Home in April 2013. He passed away there on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 64 years, Belle, his sons Richard (Jonetta) Kvale, Tucson, AZ; Dale (Mary) Kvale, Lemmon; Tim (Charlotte) Kvale, Lemmon; and his daughter, Bev (Tim) Holdahl, Dickinson, ND; grandchildren, Dan (Stacy) Kvale, Bison, SD; Anne (Matt) Young, Phoenix, AZ ; Rebecca (Donald) Case, Phoenix, AZ; John Kvale, Tucson, AZ; Lilianna Holt, Tucson, AZ; Clint (Jennifer) Kvale, Lemmon, SD; Mandy Kvale, Lemmon, SD; Jarid (Lara) Kvale, Sioux Falls, SD; Jade (Louisa) Kvale, Baltic, SD; Jordan Kvale ( Jayma Odermann), Bismarck, ND; Sarah (Preston) Keller, Bismarck, ND; Katrina Holdahl (Matt Wiesinger), Lemmon, SD; 16 great grandchildren; one brother, Harold Kvale, Lemmon, SD; two sisters, Irene Young and Thelma Lemke, both of Lemmon, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
