Norman Gotthilf Iszler was born in the hospital in Elgin, ND on March 5, 1939 to Gotthilf and Anna (Alt) Iszler. He was the oldest of three children and grew up on a farm north of New Leipzig, North Dakota. He attended school in New Leipzig and graduated in 1957. Norman married the love of his life, Doris Schock from Elgin, ND. They made their life on the farm where Norman grew up. They farmed with Gotthilf and Anna and eventually purchased the farm, where they stayed and raised their daughter and three sons.
Norman had a successful farming operation and was always a great provider for his family. But more than that, he loved farming and instilled great work ethic into his children through his training and example. He especially exemplified integrity and being a person of his word. But he also often set aside farm projects in order to support his family's activities in church, school, sports and community.
Norman was a valuable asset to his church. He served as Sunday school treasurer and on the church council in Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Leipzig, ND. He also served his community on the Senior Meals Board and as a member of Germans From Russia. Norman was always selflessly lending a helping hand to friends, family and community in any way that he could.
Favorite titles of Norman's were Christian, Husband, Daddy, Grandpa Norman, and Friend. He was so proud of his family and always took on the role of photographer and videographer at every family gathering or event. He was everyone's go-to person for fixing things, solving a problem, or figuring out a way to do something. He always had the most generous, loving and giving heart. Norman led more by example than by words. And yet, he loved to visit for a while with anyone in an interesting conversation.
One of Norman's greatest and most consistent examples was leading his family by taking them to church every Sunday. According to his example, it was never an option to skip church or church activities, unless there was an illness, or if they were snowed-in on the farm.
Norman was a man of few words, but he truly walked out his faith by example. There was never any doubt of his love for his Lord and for his family. Norman left a great legacy of integrity, of always honoring his word, and leading his family in faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. To those of us who knew him best, he truly was a great man.
Norman is survived by his wife of 58 years Doris, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Sam Hanson, Bismarck, ND; 2 sons and 3 daughters-in-law David and Sheryl Iszler, Glendale, AZ; Paul and Melissa Iszler, Gillette, WY; and Sheila Iszler, Sydney, MT; 13 grandchildren, David Hanson, Nicholas (Calli) Hanson, Andrea Hanson, Patrick Hanson, Tirzah Hanson, Jennifer (Devin) Lear, Steven Iszler, Megan (Chance) Spaabeck, Taylor Iszler, Shawn Iszler, Taylor (Craig) O'Hara, Kenan Iszler, Kevin Iszler; 7 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Morris and Donna Iszler, Elgin, ND; sister and brother-in-law Marjorie and Jerry Helander, Stillwater, MN; brother-in-law Eldon Wolf, Elgin, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Eileen Iszler in infancy, son Mark Iszler on March 2, 2019, and sister-in-law Marlene Wolf.
