Nellie Bernice Wenande was born at Newcastle, WY, on December 4, 1921, to William J. and Gertrude (Johnson) Wenande. She grew up and attended eight years of rural school at Stroner, WY, where her parents ranched and operated the Stroner Store and Post Office. At age 13, she moved 75 miles to Gillette, WY, where she boarded in various homes to attend Campbell County High School. She graduated from this school in 1939 and then graduated from their Normal Training School in 1940.
She taught rural schools in Crook County, WY, and attended school at Spearfish Normal in the summer. In 1943, she spent the summer as a ranger at the Devils Tower National Monument.
On December 30, 1943, she was united in marriage to Norman C. "Sonny" Moore at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Newcastle, WY. Two daughters, Dee Kohn and Pat Ellis, were born to this union.
The family ranched with Sonny's parents on the Little Missouri River in Crook County raising sheep and cattle until 1960. A car wreck, in 1959, left Pat blind and forced a move to Gillette for schooling. Nell worked as a substitute teacher in both elementary and high school while tutoring Pat in the evenings.
The family moved their ranching operation nearer Gillette and she and her husband bought wool for North Central Wool Company of Minneapolis, MN. In 1976, they bought and operated a bar, "Sonny's Place," in Moorcroft, WY, where they lived until 1983 when they retired and moved to Lemmon, SD, to be near their daughter, Dee, and her family.
Nell was active in St. Mathews Catholic Church in Gillette, St. Patrick's in Moorcroft and St. Mary's in Lemmon where she was a Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister. She also took Holy Communion to shut-ins. Nell enjoyed playing bridge, golf and watching her grandchildren's sporting events. She and Sonny were active in NRCA rodeo events for over thirty years where she was the secretary and timer.
Nell had a very interesting life and being married to Sonny, as everyone knows, was always exciting. Nell was very busy in her younger years. She kept a diary from early in their marriage until she couldn't see to write any longer. At the ranch, she held all offices in the Buttons and Bows Homemakers Club and then was an honorary member until her death. Nell was the beautician for the whole rural area because she gave everyone perms, cuts and sets. She was also a very good cook. She would cook and serve a bunch of workers anywhere from a sheep wagon to her own stove. Her main jobs when working sheep were "lead-sheep handler" and when docking, she was the "vaccinator." She and Sonny went to square dances in WY, MT and SD for several years, which she really enjoyed. She was the bookkeeper for the ranch, wool buying business and Sonny's Place Bar. Nell was a kind, thoughtful person who was known as "Grandma Nell" to many people in the community and welcomed people of all ages into her home. Who else besides Nell would let a loud band practice in her basement until all hours of the night?!?!
She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Dee and Pat, her three grandkids and their spouses, Tina (Vance) Trogstad, Ryan (Jeanna) Kohn, Toni (Tracy) Hoffman, her "Super 8 Greats:" Chloe and Talon Trogstad, Tayte, Allie and Jordyn Kohn, Lyric, Jet and Scout Hoffman. Also, her brother's three kids: Dianne (Ron) McCartney, Bill (Marianne) Wenande, Deb (Arlyn) Anderson and their families as well as her numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny, her only sibling, Bob, her parents, her son-in-law, Ralph Ellis, and the father of her three grandchildren, Bill Kohn.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
