Naomi Nadine Ullman came into this world at the South Dakota State Mine north of Haynes, North Dakota on October 30, 1929, one day after the stock market crash on Black Tuesday. She was born to Lavern and Sadie (Sallee) Church. He was the bookkeeper at the mine. She attended school in Haynes and graduated in 1948, the only member of the graduating class. She always joked she was Salutatorian and Valedictorian. She married Wendell (Windy) Ullman on June 20, 1948 and they started their life together in Haynes, ND where Naomi worked at the Haynes Post Office and drove school bus while Windy worked at the Mine and farmed. They moved to the farm in Chandler Township, Adams County in 1962 and spent their remaining years together farming, raising their 6 children, and enjoying life together until Wendell's death in 1994.
Naomi was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, Haynes Ladies Aide, the Hettinger Garden Club, and an active member of the United Church of Christ in Hettinger. She loved her flower gardens, especially once she moved to town and no longer had to worry about the pigs and cows eating her flowers. She also enjoyed watching the variety of birds which would come to her many birdfeeders, even hummingbirds.
Naomi passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014, at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo, North Dakota with family by her side. We remember her strength and love, kindness, patience and determination. We will miss her wit and laughter, and the comfort of her love. We carry all those blessings she gave us forward as best we can now as her spirit moves on its own path, released from its earthly burdens
She is survived by her six children, Pam (Roger) Sorenson of Fargo, ND, Keith (Kristi) Ullman of Eugene, OR, Sandi Lewis (Larry Differding) of Richfield, MN, Roger Ullman of Bismarck, ND, Cheryl (David) Stockton of Fort Worth, TX, and Lisa Beckman of Hettinger, ND; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Wanetta Simon of New Hope, MN; one sister-in-law, Jane Church of Allen, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
