Service of Remembrance for Milbert "Shorty" Hehn, age 90, of Hettinger, ND, will be Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hettinger. Rev. Richard Wyman will officiate and burial with Full Military Honors will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitations will be Monday, August 4, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church and one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday morning.

Milbert "Shorty" Hehn was born on January 6, 1924 on the family farm near Herreid, SD, the sixth child of fourteen born to John and Christine (Kurtz) Hehn.

Milbert attended country schools through the 9th grade. He worked for several area farmers as a young man and joined the US Army in 1945, where he served in WWII along with seven brothers and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On October 13, 1948 Milbert married Violet Lucille Ryckman at Pollock, SD. Milbert and Violet began their life together at Strasburg, ND. In April of 1951 they moved to Hettinger where over the years Milbert worked for the Standard Oil Co, Adams County Creamery, Mobridge Laundry and West River Motors. After retiring from West River Motors he enjoyed moving trees for Ed Buckmier, helping area farmers at harvest time and grounds-keeping at the golf course.

In earlier years Milbert enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with family, and especially loved playing with his grandbabies. He was an avid reader and loved going for coffee with the guys. After retiring he and Vi enjoyed being "snow birds" before her passing in 1994.

Milbert was a member of the American Legion and was very proud of his and his brothers', and his sons' military service.

Milbert passed away at the age of 90, on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 while under the excellent care of the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home. He is survived by his sons; Larry (Karen) Hehn of Hettinger, ND, Jerry Hehn of Spring Lake Park, MN, and Roger (Susan) Hehn of Stanfield, OR, his daughters; Cheryl Rowlette, Yuma, AZ, and Connie (Randy) Burwick, Hettinger, ND, daughter-in-law Cindy Hehn, sister, Delores Wendland, Modesto, CA, 13 grandchildren; William, Beau, Stephanie, Aaron, Michael, Dawn, Dallas, Melanie, Alicia, Nathan, Tayler, Kyle, and Sienna, and numerous great grandchildren.

Milbert was preceded in death by his wife Violet, parents John and Christine, 10 brothers; Arnold, John, Arthur, Albert, Walter, William (Bill), Raymond, Harold, Phillip, and Gene, and 2 sisters; Frieda and Agnes.
