MAYNARD DOYLE HULM was born October 6, 1940 in Lemmon, SD the first child born to Joe and Vivian (Martin) Hulm. He grew up on a farm in the Glad Valley area and attended a local country school and agriculture school in Rapid City. He was a teacher at the Thorpe one room school house for a short time, and spoke fondly of his time there for the entirety of his life.

He joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in April of 1961 and was activated during the Berlin Crisis shortly after. Maynard was honorably discharged from the service in March of 1965.
He moved to Colorado, began a family, and started working in construction. He moved his family to Hawaii in 1970 to partner in a construction company. In 1971, he moved back to Colorado and started Hulm Construction Company. He would eventually branch to establish an office in Arizona, and did work throughout much of the midwest.

In 1981, he joined the Colorado chapter of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA). He was a Chapter Board member 83-88, Secretary 85-86, Vice President 86-87, and President 87-88. He was Regional Director 88-94. Maynard was one of the founders of the Foundation of the American Subcontractors Association (FASA), established 1987.

Maynard became a National Board Member in 1992, and served as secretary in 1995. In 1996 he became treasurer, and in 98-99 he was elected National ASA President. In 2006 he received the ASA's most prestigious award, the John H. Hampshire Distinguished Lifetime Services Award. He received the ASA President's award as part of the "Financial Dream Team" in 2009. He continued his participation in the ASA until the time of his death, serving on the ASA Board of Directors, FASA Executive Committee, and the ASA Government Relations Committee amongst others.

His hobbies included travel, leather work, cooking, reading, gardening and landscaping, riding his motorcycle, and Karaoke. Perhaps, what he considered his favorite past-time was caring for others. He was particularly fond of his grandchildren and loved spending time with and encouraging them.
