MAXINE GRACE VALENTINE was born March 18, 1944 to Adrian and Rose (Gebur) Valentine in Webster, SD. She joined one sister Marlene. Maxine grew up on a farm near Butler, SD where she attended Catholic grade school and later graduated from Webster High School in 1962. After graduation Maxine attended nursing school in Devils Lake, ND. Upon receiving her nursing certification she worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, ND and later at Dakota Midland in Aberdeen, SD. It was while working in Aberdeen she was introduced to her future husband, Calvin Kahl, of Isabel, SD. The couple was married at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster on September 13, 1975. They began their life together on a ranch 5 miles south of Isabel. On October 7, 1977 Calvin and Maxine welcomed a daughter, Nicolle, into the world. Four years later, on June 16, 1981 their youngest daughter, Merretta, was born.

Maxine always loved the farm and ranch life. She knew and valued a hard day's work and strived to get the most possible done each day. From working in the field to calving barns to riding endless miles on horseback, Maxine was right at home on the ranch. Despite her contentment on the ranch, she was also very involved in her community and church. Maxine served on and was involved in St. Mary's Guild, PTO, Dakota Daughters, Sheepgrowers, Birthday Club and many other community activities. In addition, Maxine was always faithful in attending her children's and neighbor's sporting events, rodeos, school activities and church events.

Maxine will also be remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking. She was always willing and ready to bake a cake or make a salad for anyone and everyone. She never hesitated to make lunches for school bus trips, church events and community gatherings. She loved being able to brighten someone's day with a homemade gift made from scratch.

Maxine's strong spirit and faith was displayed in her brave six and a half year battle with cancer. On October 12, 2007, at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge, SD, she left our world to join her many departed friends and family.

Grateful for having been a part of her life are her husband, Calvin Kahl, Isabel, daughters, Nicolle Kahl Hendrix, of Rochester, MN and Merretta Kahl, of Isabel. Also remembering Maxine is her one sister, Marlene Erskine, Torrence, CA, sister-in-law, Brenda Jensen, Duluth, MN, mother-in-law Cora Kahl, Mobridge, SD, niece Teresa Quinn and nephew John Erskine and grandnieces, Sherydan and Shelby Quinn and grandnephew, Shayne Quinn as well as many cousins. Maxine is joined in heaven by her parents, Rose and Adrian as well as her father-in-law, Keith Kahl.
