Obituary

Graveside services for Max Smebakken, age 72, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Scholaas Cemetery on the banks of the Grand River west of Shadehill, SD with Ben Wiechmann officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather at the cemetery for the arrival of the procession.

Max Sidney Smebakken was born on April 23, 1942, in Lemmon, SD, to Gilbert and Lodie (Spilde) Smebakken. He grew up on the family ranch along the banks of the North Grand River and attended Burdick School near the ranch. Following his schooling he began working on the family ranch. Eventually he ranched with his brother, Bud, and continued the operation following Bud's death. Max enjoyed going to auction sales in the area, working with horses and helping neighbors anytime he could. He was always ready to visit over a cup of coffee and loved attending the sales at the Lemmon Livestock Auction.

Max passed away on Monday morning, October 27, 2014 at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD.

Max is survived by his brother, Albert Smebakken, Gillette, WY; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Daniel and Glenn "Bud"; and four sisters, Patsy Morgan, June Hoffman, Izola Evenson and Grace Baumeister.
