They got into milking cows and in 1973, built a new home and dairy barn. They continued in the dairy business until they semi-retired around the year 2000. In 2002, they sold their farm to Dale and Teresa, but they stayed in their home. In 2004, Ed passed away, but Mary continued to stay on the farm—checking cows out the windows.

She also enjoyed embroider and every grandchild got set of dish towels. She was known far and wide for her delicious kuchen and "butt" buns for the grandkids. She enjoyed going to church and Sunday dinners in her later years and was always up for a game of cards.
