Marvin Bail was born to Adolph and Magdalina (Maggie Horst) Bail, at McIntosh, South Dakota, on January 29, 1933. He was the second child in a family of five boys and two girls. His parents lived in several rented farms until they purchased the current Bail farm south of Morristown, SD. Marvin attended several rural schools and graduated from Fee school. He went to high school in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1952. He was drafted into the US Army in October 1953. He did basic and trained as a radio operator at Fort Riley Kansas. Marvin spent most of the rest of his army service "overseas in Texas" at Fort Hood.
In September 1955 Marvin received an Honorable Discharge from the army and returned to South Dakota where he started college at Northern State in Aberdeen. On March 3, 1956, he married Beverly Lindquist, also a Northern student, originally from Keldron, South Dakota. They finished their freshman year in Aberdeen and Marvin transferred the next fall to South Dakota State College at Brookings, where he finished his degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation from South Dakota State College, Marvin was hired by Allis Chalmers Corporation in West Allis, Wisconsin. He took advantage of a company program that allowed new hires to spend up to two years exploring the company. Faithful to his roots, he joined the group that developed and manufactured farm tractors. However, the work was not challenging, and his second exploration was in power generation which became his life work.
Marvin also took advantage of a program offered by the company to encourage the young engineers to continue their education. Professors from the University of Wisconsin, came to Milwaukee, to teach an evening class each semester. Marvin participated in the graduate level classes and earned a, Master's Degree in Engineering in 1969.
In 1965 Marvin and the family left Wisconsin and he went to work for Electric Machinery Corporation in Minneapolis Minnesota. He designed power generation equipment for Electric Machinery for more than 35 years. On weekends Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He bought a boat and a tent, using them to become an enthusiastic if not terribly successful fisherman. In the 70s, with a pickup, camper, and cheerleading from a friend, he led the family on several vacations to a remote lake in Canada.
Both of our sons were born in Brookings South Dakota while Marvin was in college. The eldest Harold is a mechanical engineer for Chrysler. His family includes his wife Marlys (Johnson), and two children Andrew, a senior mechanical engineering student and Amanda who just graduated from college and will start post graduate classes in social work at Wayne State University in Michigan, this fall. Our younger son, Daryl, is an attorney in Owatonna, Minnesota. He and his wife Pamela (Skinner) have four children and seven grandchildren. Their daughter, Josie and Tad Budke have two daughters Dakota and Alexa. Josie is a social worker for Otter Tail County. Their son, Steven and Kelsey Bail, live in Tioga, North Dakota. Steven is a plant operator for Hess Corporation in the Bakken gas field. They have two children, Sawyer and Millie. Their younger daughter, Frances and Jordan Wiersma, is a registered nurse currently caring for and raising three boys, Lucas, Elijah, and Nolan, all under three. Their younger son, Michael, is manager of a hardware store in Owatonna, and will be bringing a bride, Sara Bicknase, into the family in a few weeks.
Our daughter, Sheryl Tiburzi, is a lab technologist at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She is married to Greg Tiburzi. They have two sons, John, who currently designs high tech video games and Joel, who is a sophomore at U of M Duluth.
In retirement, Marvin and Beverly maintained a winter home in Roseville, MN and purchased Marvin's grandparent's farm (McIntosh, SD) where during the warmer part of the year he indulged his mechanical skills by keeping outdated machinery in working order. They traveled around the U.S. extensively, often with grandchildren in the back seat. Marvin And Beverly moved to Owatonna, Minnesota, in March 2018, after selling their winter home in Roseville, Minnesota.
Marvin died in his sleep, on May 9, 2020, afflicted but not defeated by cancer and dementia. His faith in Jesus and God sustained him as he awaited his call home. He will be buried in Morristown, South Dakota. Marvin is survived by his wife Beverly, two sisters, Betty Hirsch and Joyce (Tom) Hooker, three children, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
