Lyle Jay Steinmetz was born July 8, 1950 in Elgin ND, the fifth of six children born to Gale and Emma (Reamer) Steinmetz. Lyles siblings are Everett, Roger, Wayne, Karen, and Leta.

He grew up on their family farm north of Carson. He attended grade school in a little country school near their home. In fact Lyle couldn't wait to start school, he would run down to the school so much the teacher gave him his own report card, but he wasn't of school age yet. Like all of the young boys he had a pony and needed a pair of spurs. He got a pair for Christmas and tried them out on his mothers leather couch, they worked. As a young boy he loved going to auction sales and he would pretend being an auctioneer. At one sale, John Stevenson the auctioneer, had the young boy get up on a table and sell his first item; he was a natural.

Lyle graduated from Carson High School with the Class of 1968, the class that made the great Chieftain sign that so many of us have seen in the gym. He then attended Dickinson State College and then NDSU, the home of his favorite team, the Bison. He joined the Army National Guard where he served for six years.

The north and south came together one night and Lyle met Janice. He was the college man with long side burns and the crisp red shirt who opened the doors for her and wasn't afraid to meet her family and shake her dads hand. He always said "I could marry you for a while" they had a long distance romance while he was in basic training. They were married August 31, 1974 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Carson ND.

Their first home was a little trailer house south of his parents where they had their cute son, Austin. They also started to farm. In 1980, they moved to their present home where his passion was to raise cattle and farm. In 1983 he decided to attend auctioneering school. It was something that was second nature to him, but he had to attend school for it. He left for two weeks to attend school while Janice and Austin fed the cattle. In 1984, their daughter Stefanie was born.

In 1985, Lyle held his first auction sale going solo and also started working as a livestock Auctioneer for the McLaughlin Livestock Auction. During that time, Wayne Weishaar came and offered Lyle the opportunity to work with him, Reiny, and Verlyn Weishaar. Lyle later on became a partner in Weishaar Auctions. Lyle would always chuckle when people would call for a sale and ask for Lyle Weishaar. He would chuckle and say yes that is me, never wanting to make someone uncomfortable. It was a great run for 31 years! In 1991, Norm Steinle, Wayne Weishaar and Lyle became Sage Brush Realty. He felt truly blessed and grateful that God allowed him to have so many doors open to him. He cherished his relationship with his partners.

On days that sales wouldn't take him from the ranch, he spent all other days with Janice, Austin and Stef. He always said, "How much better could a man have it, the best of both worlds."
This is only a brief glimpse of his life. The kids that came into their home were cherished by Lyle and the kids are still coming.
Lyle's great blessings to this day are his son, Austin (Monica) and daughter, Stefanie (Jerry) and watching the amazing growth of his grandsons, Mason and Gabe, and granddaughters, Christina, Madison and Peyton. His love for them is beyond understanding.
Lyle went to Jesus in the blink of an eye. As Lyle and Janice drove down the highway early Monday morning, August, 15, 2016, before Lyle took his last breath Janice had the privilege to baptize Lyle into God's Kingdom.

Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife, Janice, son and daughter-in-law, Austin and Monica Steinmetz, Carson, ND; daughter and son-in-law, Stefanie and Jerry Honeyman, Morristown, SD; 5 grandchildren, Christina, Mason, and Madison, Peyton and Gabe, 2 great grandchildren, Jackson and Scarlet; 1 brother, Wayne Steinmetz, Carson, ND; 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Claude Ulrich, Carson, ND; Leta and Jeff Stewart, Bismarck, ND; sister-in-law, Jeanette Steinmetz, Carson, ND; his mother and father-in-law, Delbert and Arlene Wells; brothers-in-law, Owen (Melanie) Wells, and Casey (Bonnie) Wells, and uncle, L.D. Steinmetz, all of Carson, ND; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Roger and Everett.

Thank You for all of the kindness shown to Lyle's family. It has been an outstanding showing of love.

We will miss this husband, father, grandpa (papa) and friend who had a spirit of loving kindness.
