Lucy Lorena Law was born at White Lake, SD on July 27, 1898 to Ivory Orlan and Katherine Minerva (Thorpe) Law. She attended school there through the fifth grade. Her father passed away when she was 5 years of age, and in Jan of 1908 she accompanied her mother by emigrant car to Lemmon. They were met there by Lucy's older brother who had previously homesteaded south of Faith. Their journey in the winter by team and wagon was slowed by a snow storm and they had to take off the wheels and build sled runners for the wagon at Meadow. They arrived south of Faith to take up a homestead claim and she completed her education at the Pretty Creek and Turtle Creek rural schools.
She had taken a few piano lessons as a small girl, and loved to play, reading the music and playing by ear as well as tuning the piano. Her siblings thought her practicing was to get out of doing the dishes. She and her sister sold a pair of steers and bought a piano which was Lucy's most cherished possession. It is still in the Doak family. Lucy played for community gatherings and dances at the country schools and there she met Merle Doak. They were married on Sept. 30, 1919 at the Congregational parsonage at Dupree, SD. They began their life together with his family and later moved to a place 5 miles south. Lucy loved the outdoor ranch work and herding sheep. As the young people left to serve during WWII, a party and dance was held at a rural school, and Lucy and her piano were there to play. In 1939 they moved to the Dunbar place on Butcher Creek in Ziebach Co., 6 miles to the east where they continued to ranch until moving to Faith in the early 1970's.
After Merle's death in 1984 she spent winters with her daughter in Davenport, Iowa, and summers at her home. She later acquired an apartment in Faith living there until 1998 when she moved to Belle Fourche to live with her daughter at age 100. Then, at the age of 103 she entered the Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center, passing away there on August 29, 2005 at the age of 107 years, one month and two days. At her 107th birthday party at the nursing home she was quoted as saying the tea and fancy cake was fine, "but I'd rather be out herding cows, besides I could stay up as late as I wanted."
Lucy will be remembered for her "wit and wisdom", her love of reading and her music. She loved Spearfish Canyon and enjoyed many drives there. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church where she often provided music, was a Gold Star Mother of the American Legion, having lost her son Donald in World War II, and a member of the Busy Bee Extension Club.
Grateful for sharing her life are her son and daughter in law; Wayne and Marie Doak of Faith, daughters and son in law; Lorena Seline of Davenport, IA and Betty and Roger Krause of Belle Fourche, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and son, Lucy was preceded in death by a son in law, and grandson, four brothers and 2 sisters.
