Lucille Reich, age 91 of Mott, ND, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Mott.
LUCILLE LEMKE REICH (Grandma Shorty), daughter of Julius and Emma (Iszler) Lemke was born December 14, 1928 in rural Walker Township in Hettinger County, ND. She attended school in Walker Township and one year at Mott Public School completing an eighth grade education. In her younger years she worked as a waitress at the Holiday House in Mott.
Lucille met Randolph (Randy) Reich at a country baseball game, after which, Randy would ride 10 miles on horseback to pursue the love of his life and future bride.
Lucille married Randolph Reich, September 6, 1946, at Christ Lutheran Church in West Mott. To this union came three children; Connie, Ronnie and Randeen. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mott where Lucille taught the Kindergarten Class. Together they raised their children to love and serve the Lord and the community of Mott and surrounding small towns.
Lucille and Randolph were farmers all their lives, living on different farms north of New Leipzig and near Burt until 1960 when they purchased Randolph's parents farm. They farmed and ranched there until 1983 when Randolph semi-retired and moved to Mott. Lucille, on the farm, could be found constantly in motion, from feeding the livestock, milking the cows, tending to the animals and nursing back to health those that appeared to have no chance. She had a large garden that provided for the family throughout the year as she would preserve the produce. At harvest she would drive grain truck occasionally or help haul in the square bales that were twice her size. Lucille and Randolph were inseparable up until his passing in 1990.
Lucille was known as an awesome cook and baker, for in the older homes the oven was considered an alternate heat source. When chores were done, we would be greeted in the kitchen to fresh baked bread or rolls and homemade choke cherry jelly. Lucille enjoyed fishing with the family and had a special "tilt to her hat" to attract the big ones.
Her children and their families were a source of pride and joy. She could be found at every sporting event or concert or wherever family was involved. Christmas Eve tradition was attending church services, followed by going to her apartment as a family and lovingly "packing in" around her table for goodies and the traditional glass of Mogan David Wine or in Jim's case a "six-year-old beer". You could find Lucille walking through town at a breakneck speed almost every day or in the "little gray Datsun" with her close friend Emma Schaible, out on an adventure to nowhere special. She also spent many afternoons playing hand and foot (a card game) with some of her friends, which heaven forbid, no one could interrupt.
Lucille entered the Mott Good Samaritan Home in September of 2009 where she resided until her passing. While there she received loving care from the staff and personnel which the family greatly appreciates.
Lucille is survived by her children, Connie (Les) Haberstroh, Ronnie (Bev) Reich, and Randeen (Allen) Schulz, all of Mott, ND; grandchildren Jim (Jeri) Haberstroh, Stephanie (Greg) Wiegand, Lacey (Jake) Rigge, Randy (Tommie) Reich, Jesse Reich and Steven Schulz, 9 great-grandchildren Logan (fiancé Karli Laeger), Isabell, Elijah, Savannah, Aliyah, Gabriel, Emma Sophia, Clara, and Mathilda, brothers Elmer (Esther) Lemke, Bentley, ND; Roger (Evelyn) Lemke, Bismarck, ND, and sister-in-law Ruth Reich, Billings, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents Julius and Emma (Iszler) Lemke, and her husband Randolph Reich.
Her family would like to extend the invitation for all Lucille's cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family to attend her service on Saturday. We apologize to others who would like to attend, but due to the current state of health concerns, felt it best to be cautious.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church of Mott, ND.
Condolence cards may be mailed to Connie Haberstroh at 503 Iowa Ave, Mott, ND 58646
