Hilda Loraine Sauer was born January 18, 1926, to Rudolph and Kathrina 'Katie' (Bieber) Schumacher on a farm north of Roscoe, SD. She was Baptized and Confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church north of Roscoe. Loraine attended elementary school at Sangamon Township Country School. She then attended Roscoe High School, graduating in 1944.

On September 30, 1945, Loraine was united in marriage to Emanuel 'Sam' Sauer at Hope Lutheran Church. They purchased the Keldron Store, which became known as Sam's Place. Living quarters were connected to the store and they raised their family there. Over the 33 years at the store, they enjoyed many good friendships with the customers. They were active members of Christ Lutheran Church in Morristown. Loraine was active in Ladies Aid and Sunshine Extension Club. In 1977, Loraine and Sam retired and moved to Morristown after selling their store. In 1993, they relocated to Mobridge, SD. They enjoyed dancing and traveling as long as health permitted.

After Sam's passing in 2001, Loraine became involved in the Mobridge Senior Citizens Center. She played cards and took bus trips with friends. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening. Loraine provided Donald Heidt and Anita Heidt Wagner (her father's cousins) with information and photos needed for the Heidt genealogy book they composed. She moved to Aberdeen in 2015 and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She moved to assisted living in 2017, and then to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in February of 2020.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Joyce (Gene) Svihovec, her daughter-in-law, Gayle Sauer, grandchildren: Rod Sauer, Jodi Sauer, (and their mother, Diane Sauer), Jill Svihovec and Angela Svihovec, one great-grandchild: Samantha Sauer, one step grandchild, Amy (Joe) Boland, two step great-grandchildren, Emily Boland and Blake Boland, and her niece-in-law, Marie Iverson.
