Obituary

Lola Hobbs died on October 1, 2024, at Del Cerro Manor in San Diego, CA. She was born to Ervin and Clara Smith on August 18,1937 in Lemmon, SD and grew up on the family ranch south of Lemmon. Lola was a scholar; graduating as Valedictorian from high school and then with High Honor from the University of South Dakota. She earned her master's degree in political science at Pennsylvania State University where she met her husband, John.

Lola and John moved to San Diego in 1964 where she earned a second Master's Degree in Sociology which became the basis for a life-long career of serving and protecting others. She is pictured on the night she was awarded the San Diego's "Woman of the Year" in recognition of her tireless service in agencies that served and protected both children and senior citizens.

Lola loved horses and the outdoors. She was a fearless rider who would tackle any horse she could get a bridle on; but her greatest love was her mare, Whirlaway. She loved hiking and bird watching as well; and was a talented artist that loved sketching the prairie, birds, and flowers.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Mavis Thoreson and Iris Slack. She is survived by her younger sister, Christine Schirber, as well as six nieces and nephews: Deb Slack, Jim Slack, Juliet Slack Gaydos, Dan Slack, Cara Schirber Biegler and Elizabeth Schirber Stinson as well as great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside service and burial in Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon will take place in the spring of 2025. She will be buried next to her parents, Clara and Ervin Smith
