Leonard Jean Mohr was born May 17, 1932 in Kennebec South Dakota. He was the son of George and Margaret (Hess) Mohr. Leonard grew up on the family farm in Lyman County and attended country school. During the Korean War, Gene served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953 and was stationed in Hawaii. On May 29, 1954 he was married to Helen L.(Hamiel) in Kennebec SD. Following their marriage they lived in Kennebec until 1974 when the moved to Belle Fourche. Gene drove a bulk truck, worked road construction, and was employed at American Colloid. He also worked at Wharf Resources near Lead. He retired in 1997, on his 65th birthday. Helen died in 2000.

Gene was a fun person to know. He enjoyed life. His grandchildren will remember the stories he used to tell, the tricks and jokes he'd pull on them, and how he would sometimes take the liberty of teaching them to drive at young ages. Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing; the annual hunting trip with family and friends in Lyman County will always be remembered. He loved rodeos, and would never miss a Fourth of July rodeo in Belle Fourche. He loved his children, grandchildren, and especially his wife. He was a devoted husband, having cared for Helen during her illness for some time. He was a "talker" as well and could talk to anyone. Gene was a special dad and grandpa, and will be missed greatly.

Gene is survived by his son, Loren (Linda) of Custer; daughters, Lynelle (Rod) Deibert of Glendale AZ, LeAnn (Newt) Luedecke of Farmington MO; 5 grandchildren, Steven and Christine Luedecke, Nicole Walton, Zac Bader, Sydney Mohr; 3 great grandchildren, Tayla, Alyssa, and Keanna; brother, Gerald (Adella) Mohr of Reliance SD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sisters, Mardell, Denise, and DeeVonne.
