Leona Lydia Wolf was born December 15, 1929 in Elgin to Jacob and Magdalena (Schock) Wolf. Growing up, Leona stayed busy helping her Dad work the fields, milk the cows, and raise pigs and chickens. She drove tractor when only ten years old. Cleaning the chicken coop was her least favorite chore. She attended rural elementary school and graduated from Elgin High School in 1948. Following graduation, Leona taught school for three years. On October 3, 1953, she married James Ulrich and together they raised six children.
Leona was an active and faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church and served on the altar society. She loved canning, baking homemade buns, caramel rolls, and kuchen, crocheting, sewing, embroidering, reading, and spending time with her family, especially playing pinochle. She made wedding and anniversary cakes for many years. Leona made many patchwork quilts for family and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to her and she made a baby quilt and receiving blanket for each of them. Leona enjoyed cutting recipes out of newspapers and testing them on her family. Leona often wrote poems for anniversaries and special occasions. The poems were especially enjoyed by the people they were written for, as they were a reflection of the lives of the recipient and often brought much laughter.
Once her kids were grown, Leona did book work for James when he was manager of the elevator. She also worked for a number of years as a CNA at Dakota Hills Housing.
Leona had a heart of gold and always put her family first.
Leona is survived by her husband James, son, Larry (Darlene), Elgin, daughter, Gail (John) Hayes, Bismarck, daughter, Susan (Dave) Richter, Bismarck, son-in-law Bob Doll, Bismarck, son, Dennis (Carlene), LaCrosse, WI, and son, Clayton (Rhonda), Mandan, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, sisters, Delores Bader, Fargo and Alverna (Clarence) Veitz, Bismarck, sister-in-law, Sharron Wolf, Detroit Lakes, MN, brother, Rudy (Mary) Wolf, Bismarck and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Paulette Doll, six sisters, Lorraine Weikum, Bernice Thompson, Bernetta Tietz, Luella Baesler, Darlene Nagel, and Claudina Wolf, and two brothers Jacob Wolf and an unnamed infant brother.
