LaVerne M. Palmer was born November 22, 1916 to pioneer homesteaders Ed Palmer and Bertha (Stice) Palmer in Vale Township, Perkins County, SD. She grew up on the family homestead and attended grade school in a sod house at West Cash. LaVerne graduated from high school in Brookings and returned to the family farm. She worked as a housekeeper and "nanny" for many families in the Hettinger, ND area eventually meeting Richard Woll. They were united in marriage December 31, 1941 and made their home together in Scotch Cap Township in Perkins County where they began ranching and farming. Five children were born to this union: Betty, Dick, Bev, Judy and Bob.

LaVerne continued raising her children and helping around the farm. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and providing the place and meals for big get-togethers with family and neighbors. Family was important so Richard and LaVerne spent many hours traveling to spend time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard passed away in 2000 and LaVerne continued to live on the ranch with her family. Due to her failing health, she entered the West River Regional Medical Center in the Fall of 2008.

LaVerne passed away on November 7, 2008 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Grateful for having shared LaVerne's life are her daughter, Betty and Duane Dickhaut, Piedmont, SD and their children Rob and Beth Dickhaut and son Eric, Lincoln, NE, and Randy and Anne Dickhaut and children Hannah, Emma, Zach and Katrina, Summerset, SD; son Dick and Joie Woll, Lodgepole, SD; daughter Bev and Larry Rodie, Denver, CO; daughter, Judy and Dennis Frick, Nekoma, KS, their son, Justin and Alyssa Frick, LaCrosse, KS and daughters Lacy and Lindsay, Lincoln, NE; son Bob and BJ Woll, Hurdsfield, ND and children Jared, Lincoln, NE and Jason, Hurdsfield, ND; and a sister, Lucille A.
